Ro-Ena was settled comfortably in the chair she had sat on hours earlier as she got pleasure from engaging in a conversation with Nick. They seemed to have talked about everything. She couldn’t believe how easy he was to talk with. She felt comfortable around him after the rocky start between the two of them subsided. All she needed was to look deep into his eyes and she can tell he was listening to her every word. He understood her. He sympathized with her. He laughed with her. Within a matter of hours, a bond was created between the two of them: a bond that was rare and unexplainable but extremely precious. Ro-Ena was suddenly captivated by the darkness outside as the streetlamps were turned on to light the darkened streets while random cars passed by making whooshing sound: it had rained. “Oh my god, it’s dark outside!” she retorted in disbelief while looking at her watch. “We had been sitting here for about 3 hours now!”
“3 hours? I’m surprise they never kicked us out!” Nick laughed while shifting his body around to look outside.
“Yeah,” she chuckled. “Well, as much as I hate to end this conversation with you, I’m afraid I have to. My place is about an hour away from here and I need to head home, I’ve got about a million homework due tomorrow!”
The two of them got up from their seat and walked out of the coffee house together.
“Where did you park your car, I’ll walk you there since it’s pretty dark already and I don’t want to just send you off walking in the dark by yourself,” Nick offered while buttoning his jacket. He felts goosebumps on his arms as it signified the sudden drop of the temperature. The sun was no longer present to provide warmth. Now, it was just the wind making its way through the streets. There was a lingering smell that was always present just after it had rained as the whooshing sound passing vehicles made continued.
“Over there,” Ro-Ena pointed out to the stairs that leads down the underground trains. “I don’t drive. I ride the subway!”
“Oh,” Nick uttered while looking at the direction where Ro-Ena was pointing. “Uh…how about I drop you off? It’s faster that way!”
Ro-Ena cringed her body, “That’s nice of you but, that’s okay, you don’t have to go out of your way for me. I’m used to taking the subway. I only take it every day!” she laughed.
“I really don’t mind. I would actually feel better if you let me drop you off home since it was partially my fault that you were out this late,” he insisted. “Besides, if I drop you off, you’ll get home quicker. The quicker you get home, the sooner you can start on your homework!”
Ro-Ena bit her lower lip while thinking as quickly as she could. “Where did you park your car?” she asked while giving in and accepting his proposal.
“It’s right over there!” he said while pointing to a dark colored Infinity QX4. The color was hard to decipher, the lights from the streetlights weren’t light enough to distinguish one dark shade from another. It all seemed to take on the shade of black.
The two of them walked side by side each other as they headed off to where Nick had parked his vehicle. When they both got to the jeep, a shadow of a figure approach them from behind.
“Hi, Ena!” he said in a low yet eerie voice.
Ro-Ena quickly turned around to find her self, standing in front of the one person she dreaded more than anything in the world. “Jay!” she chortled choking on her own words.
“You know this guy?” Nick asked as he walked beside her.
“Stay out of this buddy,” Jay said. “I wouldn’t want to dirty your pretty face!”
Nick reached out for the handle of the door of his vehicle and held Ro-Ena by her left arm, “Ro-Ena get inside the car, now”
Just as Ro-Ena was to follow Nick’s instruction, Jay grabbed her other arm, “I don’t think so!” Jay claimed in an aggressive tone. “She and I have some stuff to deal with and I ain’t letting her go until I get what I want! Now fuck off before you find yourself sorry for butting in where you don’t belong!”
Nick moved closer to where Jay was standing while grabbing his grasp off of Ro-Ena. “Are you threatening me?”
“Take it as you may, asshole!” Jay replied
“Nick, come on, he’s not worth the trouble!” Ro-Ena pulled the back of Nick’s jacket as she opened the door enough to give her access inside the car but not really going inside until she was sure Nick was going to head to his side of the vehicle so that they can drive away.
“You’re not going anywhere, Ena!” Jay screamed as passer-by’s looked at the sudden burst of commotion.
Ro-Ena pulled out her cell-phone from her pocket, not taking her stare at both Nick and Jay. “Nick, let’s go,” she said as she felt her heart begin to race once again; the same type of race that she had felt earlier when all that separated her from Jay was a 2-inch thick wooden door
“Yeah you think I’m scared of a bunch of dykes with police badges? They’re incompetent morons, Ena! If they were any good, then how in the hell can they have this much trouble tracking me down? Now get your ass over here and let me deal with you! Don’t make this harder for you!”
“I don’t think so!” Nick stood between Jay and Ro-Ena, persistent of protecting the girl. “Now the police may have a hard time kicking your ass but you can bet that I won’t have second thoughts on brushing that sidewalk with your face!”
Jay began to chuckle as he began to move away. “One day, Ena, one day I’ll get what I want! I always get what I want. Always! You just remember that! Both of you! I always get what I fucking want! Everybody hear that?” he screamed out while spreading both his arms out as he stood in the middle of the sidewalk. “I always get what I fucking want!”
“Nick, let’s go!” Ro-Ena called on him as she settled herself on the passenger seat. Nick began to walk to the driver’s side, not taking his eyes off of Jay, whom was still screaming on the sidewalk like a maniac.
