Her long dark, straight hair flowed out from her head as it danced along with the morning breeze. While it moved one with the wind, the air was filled with the slight scent of shampoo. She quickly grabbed her entire head of hair as she brushed it up in a quick ponytail while getting up from the rocking chair she was comfortably set in and walked back inside her Toronto high-rise condominium. It was the last week of September and the air was already changing, as the wind began to blow a colder air in comparison to the warm, summer breeze; but she loved the cool air. Ro-Ena Armstrong, a 22-year old student attending her last year at the University of Toronto majoring in the program of Neuroscience/Psychobiology, presented a strong-willed and very independent young lady with great desires of success in the future. While her peers partied until the break of dawn every weekend, she spent most of her time at her small downtown condominium reading through her psychology books, memorizing each word and each phrase indignantly.
The thick glass door made a small whooshing sound as Ro-Ena slid it open to give her access back inside her small but cozy place. A white robe cloaked her entire body as it was joined around the waist by a tie of the same material as her robe. Her body shivered a little bit as the phone began to ring. Ro-Ena quickly dropped the psychology magazine she was reading outside her balcony on the couch nearby as she ran to where the phone had silently sat prior to its disturbance of the sudden sound of ringing and quickly picked it up.
“Hello?” she said, revealing a soft toned voice. “Jay…what do you want? Didn’t I tell you to leave me alone? No you can’t come over…what do you mean you’re in my…” mid sentence, Ro-Ena stopped talking as she dropped the phone, not placing it on the receiver as she quickly shifted her sight to her front door.
She quickly examined the three locks she had installed. Ro-Ena let out a sigh of relief as she saw that all of her locks were all positioned so that no one could get in. She held the telephone receiver against her right ear once again, “Just go away Jay! There’s no way in hell that I’m letting you in, not after everything! Now go away before I call the cops!” with that, Ro-Ena dropped the phone back on its receiver and looked back at her front door again. Silence. Jay was bluffing. She knew he was lying when he told her he was standing in front of her door, waiting for her.
Ro-Ena took a deep breath while walking passed her front door to make her way on the other side of her apartment where her bedroom was situated. Just as she was walking by the door, a sudden bang caused her to let out a shrill as her heart began to beat faster than its normal rate.
“Ena, come on!! Open the door!” A male’s voice boomed out from nowhere
“Go away, Jay!” Ro-Ena screamed out. “If you’re not gone in 5 seconds, I’m calling the police!” she threatened
Silence fell.
Ro-Ena remained immobile as she listened intently of any sign that her threat of calling the police scared Jay away and he had left just as she instructed.
Silence.
Ro-Ena, not satisfied with the silence, moved closer to the door and held her ear against the door to listen to the other side.
Silence.
“Maybe he’s gone?” she thought to her self, as her heart began to beat a little bit faster and beads began to form around her forehead. She moved her ear away from the wooden door, but kept her right hand leaning against the door. Taking one deep breath, her sight fell on the little peephole. She moved her head closer to look outside; the best way to find out if Jay was gone was to see for herself, and what better way than using the peephole, it was after all what it was there for. She moved her right eye close to it as the sight she saw sent her a few feet away, in fear.
Jay’s eyes were held against it too; he was trying to see if he could see inside her apartment through that. “Jay, go away!” her voice began to tremble as her entire body shook in fear. “Go away!” she screamed.
“I just want to talk to you!” he begged. “Open this door, Ena. Let me talk to you! Just give me 5 minutes, that’s all, and I’ll leave after that! Ena, open this door goddamn it!”
Ro-Ena quickly ran to her telephone. “I’m calling the cops, Jay!” she threatened as she began to dial 9-1-1.
“Open this fucking door, Ena! Open this door now!” he screamed at the top of his lungs as he began to kick and bang against door with all his might, as if he was trying to break it down himself.
“Someone please come and help me,” Ro-Ena said on the telephone as her eyes began to water and her voice trembled in sheer fear. “It’s my ex-boyfriend, he’s back. I have a restraining order against him and he’s here right now banging on my door!”
The banging on the door continued as Jay continuously screamed at Ro-Ena forcing her to open the door for her.
Within minutes, in the distance, the sound of sirens began to wail, closer and louder by the seconds. Ro-Ena had remained on the telephone with one of the 9-1-1 operators on the other end, trying to keep her calm. The banging and screaming suddenly stopped as Ro-Ena heard the sound of footsteps scrambling further away. “I think he left,” she whispered to the operator.
“Detective Phoenix is with the police, he and the police will come up there to inspect your place, to make sure that your stalker really is gone.”
“Okay thank you,” Ro-Ena prompted as she hung the receiver back to its original place. She ran into her bedroom to put some decent clothes on.
Just as she finished buttoning her jeans on, the sudden loud knock on the door startled her.
“Miss Armstrong, this is Detective Phoenix with the police, please open your door.”
Finally, her fear subsided, as she felt once again safe inside her own house; the police are finally there to protect her from her crazed ex-boyfriend.
