Chapter 5

On the way back to Nick's, Adrianne and Nick stopped at her house.

"I just need to check the answering machine." Adrianne said as her and Nick entered the house. "I'll only be a minute. You can help yourself to anything, although I don't think there's much in the fridge."

Adrianne walked into the living room, where the answering machine was. There were five messages. Adrianne sat down on the couch and listened.

Message #1- Adrianne, it's Bri. Are you there?... I guess not. I'll call later.
Message #2- It's me again. Where are you? It's been three hours. Oh well, I'll call back.
Message #3- This is getting ridiculous. Where the hell are you? Damn it.
Message #4- I'm really pissed now Adri. This isn't funny anymore.
Message #5- You stupid bitch! Where are you? You ugly little whore. Ya know, you're lucky I married you. No one else wants you. I gotta go..

Adrianne got up and walked quickly out of the house.

"Adrianne?" Nick said running, "What happened?"

"Brian's right" Adrianne cried, "Maybe, I am an ugly whore."

"No, you're not!" Nick said, brushing his hand against Adrianne's cheek, "You're beautiful. Don't let anyone ever tell you you're not."

That made Adrianne smile.

'Damn Brian!' Nick said to himself, 'Damn him for treating Adrianne like this.'

As they drove back, Adrianne saw a mother with her baby girl.

"Did you and Brian ever talk about having kids?" Nick asked.

"Yeah" Adrianne said, "I want a baby so badly, you have no idea. But, Brian says he wants to wait a few years."

By the time Nick pulled into his driveway, Adrianne had fallen asleep. Nick carried her out of the car and into the house. Then, he carried Adrianne upstairs and into his room, placing her gently on his bed.

Nick stripped down to his boxers (what he usually wore to bed) and laid next to Adrianne.

"Good night" Nick whispered, "I love you." He kissed Adrianne on the forehead and tightened his grip around her.

The next morning Adrianne woke up to Nick staring at her.

"Hey" Nick said, "It's about time you woke up. I got you some breakfast." He handed her a McDonald's bag, "I know it's not anything special, but the last time I tried to cook, I almost burnt the house down."

"It's ok, Nick" Adrianne said, "Thank you." She happily ate her food.

"I've got an idea." Nick said, "It's been while since you've been on my boat. How about we take a ride around today?"

Adrianne agreed.

They spent the whole day riding on Nick's boat.

"It's so beautiful out here." Adrianne said.

Nick led Adrianne to the front of the boat and the two of them watched the sunset together. As they headed back, Adrianne got a call from Emily.

"Em? What's up?"

"Brian, just called here."

"What? What did he want?"

"He wanted to know where you were."

"What did you tell him?"

"I told him you've been hanging out here."

"Thanks. You didn't have to do that."

"That's what sisters are for. If you need some help, I can cover for you as long as you want."

"Thanks, but I'll deal with it. Talk to ya later."

Once Adrianne and Nick got back to Nick's house, they sat on the porch. Adrianne looked really upset. Nick couldn't keep his mouth shut any longer,

"Adrianne, I love you. More than a friend. I hate seeing you like this. I hate Brian for treating you like crap. I'll never treat you like that."

Adrianne spoke, "Nick, I..."

Nick placed his finger on her lips, "Shhh... let me show you how you should be treated." He replaced his finger with his lips.

Adrianne had never felt anything more wonderful in her life. Without any hesitation, she kissed Nick back. While they were kissing, Adrianne took off Brian's engagement ring and wedding band off and dropped it on the ground.
