"Hey babe, guess what?" she told him quickly.
"I found out what's up with Mel!"
"And?"
"She's pregnant."
"You're kidding."
"I wish I was but I'm not."
"Wow! Did she tell Nick?"
"Nope. She's scared to."
"How did you find all this out?"
"I read her diary. I know its mean but I had to."
"OK, so what are you going to do?"
"I don't know."
Just then Melissa entered the kitchen and sat down at the table.
"Look I got to go now."
"OK I'll try to think of something. Bye."
"Bye bye. Luv ya."
"Yea me too."
Meg hung up the phone and the and sat at the table right across from Melissa.
"Why do I get the feeling you are looking at me like I've got 2 heads?" Melissa asked.
"If I tell you something will you promise not to be mad?"
"Depends on what it is."
"OK, well I kind of took a peek at your diary."
"You what?"
"I only did it because I care about you and wanted to know what's going on in your head."
"My diary is my private business! You have no right to be snooping into my life!"
"Melissa, I know."
"Know what?" Melissa asked back defiantly, even though she was scared that Meg knew her secret.
Just then the doorbell rang. "I'll get it, " Meg told her, "but when I come back we will continue this."
How ironic, Melissa thought. It was starting to seem like Meg was becoming the responsible older twin and Melissa was becoming the sarcastic one who was always getting in trouble instead of the other way around.
When Meg reached the door and opened it she was suprised to see Nick standing outside. Very bad timing, she thought.
"Hey Nick," she greeted.
"Hey. AJ told me that Mel had something to tell me?"
I'm going to kill AJ when I get my hands on him she told herself. Out loud to Nick she just shrugged and said, "I have no idea what it's about but me and Mel were just talking. We'll be right back so just make yourself at home."
"OK," Nick said as he sat down on the couch, as Meg walked back into the kitchen.
"Who was it?" Melissa asked.
"Its Nick and he wants to talk to you."
"Oh great!"
"It gets better. AJ told him that you had something to tell him."
"You told AJ? Who else knows? The whole world maybe?"
"No, just you, me, and AJ and hopefully you are going to tell Nick."
"I don't know. Maybe."
"You need to tell him. I'll go and leave you guys alone. Maybe I'll go bother AJ."
"Yea, whatever."
"Tell him Mel."
Just then Nick walked into the kitchen. "Tell me what?" he asked.
"Oh nothing," Melissa answered quickly. "Meg's just leaving now."
"Yea. Bye guys," she told them as she left.
Melissa headed towards the living room and Nick followed her, "So, what did you want ?" he asked.
Melissa shrugged, "I don't know. Talk maybe."
"About what?"
"Stuff."
"Oh, OK."
There was another long awkward silence and finally Melissa just snapped, "What the hell is wrong with us?"
"What do you mean?"
"Listen to us. We can barely talk to each other!"
"Well, we were fine 2 months ago until you wanted to break up!"
"Oh, so this is all my fault huh?"
"Well, I never found anything wrong with what we had!"
"You don't understand do you?"
"No, I don't! Please enlighten me."
"Well, here are the facts. I'm blind. I can't see anything. You are a regular guy and down the road you're going to meet someone else, some other girl who can see and then your choice will be clear."
"How do you know though? You haven't even given me a chance!"
"I don't have to give you one because I know what will happen! You'll end up leaving me!"
"I'm so glad you have faith in me!" Nick told her sarcastically. "I really thought that by now you would realize that I'm not like that. I thought that after everything we shared you would completely trust me and never doubt me. God, was I wrong!"
"Here we go again! Blame it on me, the poor helpless little blind girl. Can't you see I'm the victim here?"
"No, I can't! You want to see what I do see? I see a girl who I used to love but is now so busy feeling sorry for herself and trying to get sympathy from others that she's forgotten what important. That's what I see!"
"That's not true," she said softly.
"Bullshit! Let me give you some advice Melissa, stop lying to yourself and admit when you're wrong. Don't expect others to do everything for you. Sometimes bad things happen and you have to just live with them. Now, if you'll excuse me I'm going to go now because I have a date tonight."
"Wouldn't want to interfere with your social life," she said sarcastically.
"You know something? You turned out to be no better than Erin!" then he walked out the door, out of her life for good probably.
Melissa just sat there numb for a second. She could never have guessed that Nick could ever get so angry and could ever be that cruel to her. Most of all she never thought that she could hate him like she did now.
She had tried to tell Nick the truth but had only managed to make things worse between them. Now what was she going to do?
All she wanted to do right now was get away from the pain and misery. She slowly made her way to the kitchen where Meg had stored some liquor in one of the cabinets. After she quickly found it she poured herself a glass of God knows what and gulped it down then poured herself another and another.
The stuff tasted horrible, probably because Melissa never drank except for some champagne at weddings. After a while she brought her drink along with the bottle of liquor into the living room.
She sadly turned towards the window and realized it was raining hard. Just like the time when Nick came to visit me in New York, she thought to herself.
With a sigh she turned on the radio. I Knew I Loved You by Savage Garden was playing. Just listening to it reminded her of being in Nick's arms and how they had danced to it right before they made love for the first time. As she closed her eyes she could almost remember every single word, every single kiss, every single touch, but he shouldn't be thinking about that right now.
She changed the station but it was no help. Every single song that played reminded her of something that she and Nick shared.
Finally she got up desperately trying to wipe the flowing tears from her face. She had never cried this much in her life. Now she only wished that she could be in Nick's arms and he would just hold her but it wasn't going to happen. She went over to the CDs feeling the Braille tags that she had put on all of them. She needed something that wouldn't remind her of Nick.
She finally found her Nsync CD. Perfect! Melissa thought as she popped it in. The weird thing was normally she couldn't stand Nsync but now it just seemed perfect.
She kept drinking and crying until the room started to spin and she felt herself slipping into a deep, dark abyss.
