Secrets

Later on that night after Nick and AJ had left Meg sneaked into her sisters room. Melissa was laying on her bed asleep. She hadn't even bothered to change into her P.J's.

As quietly as possible Meg began to rummage through her sisters drawers and the cardboard boxes that Melissa had not yet unpacked. She was looking for something, anything that might give her clue on Melissa's behavior lately.

After almost an hour of searching Meg was just about to give up when she remembered the key she had found in Melissa's jewelry box and the drawer in her desk that was locked up tightly. Acting on instinct Meg grabbed the key put it in the lock on the drawer and heard the click of the lock opening. Yes, jackpot! Meg thought as she opened the drawer. Inside she found a fat spiral notebook. She opened it up and on the first page it read Dear Diary on top. She should have guessed that Melissa kept a diary. Maybe inside there would be a clue to whatever was going on inside Melissa's head.

She quietly snuck out of the room and ran to her own. As she opened up the diary she felt slightly guilty looking into her sisters personal life like this but she felt it must be done.

The first few entries were mostly about her worries about the operation and being sick, wrote before they went to Cancun. After a while she got bored and began to skim the passages until she reached more recent ones like around the time they were in Cancun.

As Meg read page after page about how great Nick was in Melissa's eyes she was very confused on why she dumped him.

As she read on Meg had to laugh a little. Her sister wasn't as innocent as she had thought according to some of these umm very detailed entries.

When Meg finally reached the end of the diary she was frustrated to find out it ended the night before the operation. Of course! Melissa wouldn't have been able to write now that she was blind. Duh! meg thought.

She was just about to out the diary away when a slip of paper fell out. She opened it up and realized it was a piece of Braille notepaper where her sister had wrote something but what?

She ran back to her sister's room and got a book that she had used to help Melissa learn Braille. She then quickly translated the note which basically said that the rest of her diary was saved on disk on the computer. Of course! Since she couldn't write it was easier for her to type on the computer. The only thing was where was the disk?

Meg looked at the clock and realized how late it was but knew that she wouldn't be able to sleep until she found out what was wrong with Melissa. She sat down at the computer and tediously began searching disk after disk.

The hours were ticking by and still Meg found nothing. Soon there was only one more disk left. With a sigh Meg popped it in hoping that this would be the one.

It worked! She was now looking at the rest of her sister's diary. Basically all of the entries were about how she hated being blind blah, blah, blah and so on, but one entry written 2 weeks ago shocked her. She had discovered what was wrong with Melissa!

The entry read:

Dear Diary:

Right now I feel so abandoned and alone. I always thought I was invincible, that nothing could touch me but I was wrong. First I was diagnosed with the tumor. Then I had the operation and wound up being blind and now there's something else wrong with me.

I found out today when I went to the doctors for my checkup. The doctor called me into his office and I was so scared because I knew something was wrong. In reality it was something that most people might be happy about but when the doctor said those 7 words that changed my life forever I wished I was dead. He said: "Well, according to your test results you're pregnant."

Me? Pregnant? The words don't seem to go together. I don't even know what I'm going to do. I can't take care of a kid if I'm blind and I don't believe in abortion and would not want to give the kid up for adoption. And how am I supposed to tell Nick? I'm going to have to especially since Meg and I are moving down to Florida, really close to Nick and AJ.

I haven't told a soul any of this not even Meg. I'm so confused! What am I going to do?

Meg slowly turned off the computer and started towards her room. She was shocked. She couldn't even imagine how Melissa must feel. All Meg knew was she needed a plan.
