“Ava, I’m going to kill you!” Melanie shrieked “this wasn’t any business of the police!”
“Look, Mel, you sounded so sure that I just had to call that number, your real parents have a right to know your safe, think of all their worry!” Ava said with a pleading voice. Melanie knew she shouldn’t be mad at her best friend for doing what she thought was best. But she couldn’t keep the fact that she was mad out of her voice
“look, Ava, I’ll call you tomorrow when I’ve calmed down, ok?” she said
“Sure, by Mel” Ava said in a small voice
“bye” Melanie said hanging up. “AAUGH!” she screamed, launching the phone across the room. She fell back on her bed, remembering the phone call. It was Jane Carter, her ‘mother’ as Jane had said, and they would be obliged to meet somewhere. Melanie was just starting to argue back saying no, her mother was dead, when Gary, or, her father had walked in, having overheard Melanie’s end of the conversation. Melanie had simply handed the phone to him, then ran upstairs to call Ava, demanding to know how Jane Carter had reached her.
“Melanie” a knock sounded from her door
“it’s unlocked” Gary Parked walked in
“Mel, there’s something I need to tell you right now”
“Oh God” Melanie moaned, sitting up, “what now”
“it seems as if, you we’re supposedly kidnaped when Ann came to America while we were living in England, and we have to do a DNA sample Thursday to see if your really,” he paused,
“to see if your really the Carters child”
