~Ch 1~
Melanie tried to concentrate on the game, and cheering, tried not to think about the picture. She had cut out the picture and info, and stuck them into her binder. Then went to get a shower. Now she was thinking, she forced herself to keep her mind on the cheer.
“DEFENSE DEFENSE!” she yelled in sync with the other cheerleaders, following the pom routine, it had been drilled into her head. She had been cheering since she was in eighth grade and loved it. They were in the fourth quarter, 2 minutes left on the clock and only needed to keep the other team from getting a touchdown to win and go to state. She watched along with everyone in the stands and the other cheerleaders and the coach as the other team went for the touchdown, and made it. Melanie felt a sense of letdown and walked slowly off the field into the locker rooms to get changed and showered. After the world’s quickest, and coldest, shower, she changed into her jeans and pulled on her Abercrombie shirt, then worked on blow-drying her hair. While she worked on that her mind started to wander back to the picture. She was sure she was the little girl, but she would be 17 then, not 18. She shook her head. She wasn’t the little girl. She was the little girl. Thoughts jumbled her head. Who was Angela Carter? “I’m not” she whispered, looking into the mirror at her eyes, almost as if she was searching. “I’m not the little girl, I’m not Angela, I’m not.” She couldn’t be.
“Finding yourself having to look in the mirror huh? Don’t break it” Laura’s voice came, startling her. “Oh shut-up and grow-up, I don’t have time to deal with you” Melanie said, throwing her brush and blowdryer into her bag and walking off, pulling out her keys as she went.
