Prologue: AWAKENING

I awoke in the darkness of a hospital room...or at least I thought it was a hospital room. The only thing that I could be totally sure of was the nauseating pain behind my eyes.

My hand fluttered up to my face momentarily, and my fingers brushed against the bandages. My fingertips felt sticky, I held them up in front of my eyes and was momentarily shocked by the sight of my own blood on them.

I let out a shriek, and the door to the room flew open. "You're awake!" A nurse came rushing in, and hovered by my bedside.

"Wh-What's wrong?" I managed.

"You've been in an accident, Rebecca." The nurse said consolingly, brushing a gentle hand against my cheek, "There's nothing to be afraid of now, darling…you're awake."

"How long was I asleep for?" I asked.

"You've been in a coma for two weeks, dear." She told me, checking the machines at the side of my bed, and nodding happily as she made marks on a clipboard that she carried.

She smiled down at me warmly; her face was round, and matronly.

"There's no need to talk about it now, Rebecca." She told me, but who was Rebecca? Was that my name? "You're awake now! Your family, and your friends will be so happy!"

"My…my family?" I stammered, My head swimming with questions that I was dying to ask.

"Of course, dear!" She said, starting for the door; "Your parents have been worried sick. And that boyfriend of yours has been holding an almost constant vigil since they brought you in!"

"Boyfriend?" I asked, shaking my head. The pain was intense, and I cringed.

She laughed softly, but I could sense that she wasn't mocking me.

"Don't worry, Rebecca," She said, "It will all come back to you with time."

She left the room then, leaving me alone to think. I searched my mind for anything even remotely familiar about whom I was…Where I was…Why I was there…but nothing came to me. It was all one huge mass of nothingness. And it was tinged with the pain that shot through my head and neck.

I decided to close my eyes and sleep. Maybe I just needed to rest.

Chapter One:

FADED MEMORIES

I was sitting up in bed, trying to force my hand to bring a spoonful of Jell-O to my mouth. I was becoming frustrated, however, and ended up with most of the Jell-O on the front of my hospital gown.

The door came open, and I jumped, startled.

"Becca?" The lady who came into the room said quietly, her voice full of tears, "Becca, it's Mommy…" I blinked.

"Mom?" I said, the word sounding foreign. She nodded.

"Uh huh." She said, blinking back tears, "It's me, honey…" She stepped over to the bed and touched my hand gingerly, "How are you feeling?"

She had soft, kindly brown eyes. And she looked at me with such tenderness, that I wanted to cry myself. I felt guilty for not knowing her…for not remembering this sweet woman who took the spoon out of my hand and brought it to my lips for me.

The tears came…and they spilled down my cheeks and landed in my Jell-O.

"Oh!" She said, pulling the tray away from my lap, "I've upset you!" She pulled the sleeve of her sweater up over her hand and dabbed at my cheeks with it.

"No…" I said, the pain coming back to my head, "You didn't upset me…" I choked on the word, "Mom…" She was quiet for a long time. I was afraid that she would go away, and leave me alone again. I felt that she was my only link back to reality...the only person that might be able to help me remember who I was.

"The…" She stuttered slightly, trying not to cry, "The doctor told us that you were suffering from some amnesia."

"Us?" I asked her, "Who else is there? Tell me, Mom!" I said, growing frantic.

"Calm down honey…It's going to be okay." She promised me, "We'll take things slowly…one thing at a time." I nodded.

"Do you have any questions that you'd like to ask me?" She offered, "I'll tell you anything that you'd like to know."

I looked at her blankly.

"What's my name?"

She looked taken aback, as though she didn't expect me to ask that question. She swallowed her tears, and spoke.

"Your name is Rebecca Elizabeth Chasez." She told me, stroking my face with a gentle hand and looking at me with such love that it seemed she might burst. I searched my mind for any memory that might make that name sound familiar…I found nothing.

"And you're my mom…" I said, looking into her eyes pleadingly.

She nodded, "Yes, I'm your mom."

"What's your name?" I asked her.

She smiled, and chuckled softly.

"My name is Karen." She said, "But let's stick with Mom, okay?"

I managed a smile, which she looked grateful for.

"Do I have a Dad?" I asked her.

"Of course you have a Dad, sweetie!" She said with a large smile, "His name is Roy."

I tried to nod, but found that it hurt too much.

"Try not to move, Becca." She said, rubbing her hand up and down the length of my arm.

"Becca…" I said quietly, "Is that what you call me?"

"Yes…" She said, she was being so patient with me, "Your friends call you Becca too."

"Becca." I said, repeating it to myself a couple of times.

I looked at her.

"Am I an only child?"

She laughed fully, it sounded like music.

"No honey," She told me, "You have two brothers, and a sister."

I blinked.

"What are their names?"

"There's Heather, your sister…who's three years older than you are." She looked at me to make sure that I understood everything she said.

"Mom?" I interrupted her.

"Yes?"

"How old am I?"

She smiled understandingly at me.

"You're nineteen, sweetie." She said, "Almost twenty."

"Okay," I said, "I have two brothers? What are their names?"

"There's Tyler, who is a year older than you are."

"So he's twenty." I said, soaking in the information like a sponge.

"Yes." She said, nodding, then she went on.

"And then there's Joshua." She watched my face with the strangest look, as though the name would strike a chord in me, "But we call him JC…he's twenty-four."

"Why are you looking at me like that?" I asked nervously.

"Oh, it's okay sweetie…it's just that you and your brother are extremely close. I was hoping that maybe hearing his name would bring something back to you."

"When can I meet them?" I asked, "I would like to see all of them."

"Your father is away on business right now, honey." She told me, "But Josh is out in the waiting room."

I nearly shot up out of my bed with excitement. "That's my brother, right?" I asked.

She nodded.

"Yes, that's your brother."

"Go get him!" I cried, making my head pound, "Please, Mom…I have to see everyone I can!"

She put her hand against my chest and calmed me down with a soft smile.

"Relax, Becca…" She said to me, "Everything in due time."

"Will you get Josh please?" I asked her again.

"Yes," She said, blinking back tears again. "I'll get him for you."
