Sound of Bells - 6

"Why the hell is he 20 minutes late?" I asked. "There was probably traffic or something." Tara said "Are you gonna get that or do you want me to?"

"Could you?" I asked her.

As she shut the door I kicked off my socks and shoes (I didn't want to look like I was waiting for him did I?)and looked in the mirror. After tearing up my closet and drawers (and countless hours of complaining that I had no clothes) I ended up wearing my khaki's and an olive 3/4 shirt.

I jumped into bed and layed down and opened the magazine that I had attempted to read earlier

Shutting Laura's door I began to think about whether or not I gave her the best advice. 'Maybe I should've told her she was better without him. But everyone knew that wasn't necessarily true. When they were together is the last time I remember her being truly happy . . . unfortunatly when he left she made a 180* turn for the worse. Was that gonna happen again? Was it gonna be my fault? Maybe if I don't answer the door and he goes away I can tell her it was the pizza guy or some-' R-I-N-G! 'So much for that idea.'

I jogged across the family room and pulled open the door. As the wind rushed in I heard the strangest far away sound. It almost seemed to be bells.

Finally, after waiting an eternity the front door opened up, and luckily too considering I was just about to turn around and lock myself in my car.

Tara, who had opened the door, was staring over my shoulder and looked like she had just seen a ghost.

Half expecting to see the killer from Scream, I slowly looked over my left shoulder. Not seeing anything I turned and looked over my right shoulder. Still seeing nothing I looked back at her and arched my eyebrow and gave her a totally puzzeled look.

As if just noticing I was there for the first time she straightend up and gave me a look that gave me the feeling that I was about to take her daughter to prom in my underwear.

"So . . . is Laura home?" I asked. I also did some weird things with my hands and shoved them back into my pockets.

After a slight hesitation she said "Yeah," but made no move to let me in. After about a minute of looking around she stepped to the side making barely enough room to let me slip by.

As I stepped inside and the door closed behind me I heard bells tolling in the distance.

* * *

I tried to make some sense of the blurred words in front of me only to find myself unable to concentrate. 'God, where are they?'

At that exact instant a soft knock came from the door. "Come in." I said turning bright pink because of the crack in my voice.

The door opened slowly and Lance stepped in. 'God he was hot. And sweet. And funny, and romantic, an- NO! I won't do this . . . not now anyways.

Trying my best to look calm I looked at him and smiled. He smiled back.

"You ready to go?" he asked looking around my room. When was the last time he was in here?

"Yeah." I said leaning down to put my shoes back on.

When I stood up we both walked out the door. As I was leaving Tara looked up from her seat at the kitchen table and smiled what was meant to be a reassurance. Unfortunatly it was hard for me to be reassured by someone who is biting their nails.

Outside, when I turned around to shut the door the sound of bells came through the trees.
