Justin slowly walked Roxy into the house, his hand in hers, the silence between them perfectly conveying all the words that could have been said. Her tears had ceased their descent down her cheeks, not because her heart had finally conquered the pain but because she had merely run out.
He had helped considerably. He stood beside her, his breath even with hers, not trying to know what she was going through, just simply promising to be there. He said nothing, touched her not, just stood beside her. And that was enough.
She had taken her hand into his just moments before, and led him towards the house, signaling that she was ready to come inside. The rain had not desisted to fall, the drops descending just as rapidly as before, dark clouds lumbering above them, deep rumblings of the earth rolling in the distance.
She smiled softly as a thank you, her fingers rubbing his as she brought his hand to her lips, kissing the tips of his fingers gently. "Justin," she whispered, as they entered the apartment, breaking the silence as gently as she could, "I’m sorry you have to deal with this…" she said as she shook her hair out. "I mean, you hardly know me and you’re already caught up in the craziness of my world," she laughed sadly. She knew she was trying to push him away, to scare him, just like she had so many others. But part of her knew that he was different; knew that he wouldn’t be shaken, and deep down, she didn’t want him to.
"Rox," he whispered as he held her close, his hands rubbing over her bare arms, as she shivered, "I want to be apart of your world, no matter how crazy it may be. I want you to tell me things, to share yourself with me…I want you to trust me."
She sighed, looking away before he lifted her chin to face him. He plowed on, not caring that he was taking a risk, the words that weren’t needed before came bursting out of him now, "Roxy, as stupid and rushed as this seems, I’m in love you," he said gently, not caring if his love for her was requited, "and I want to know more about you, I want you to talk to me, and I want to talk to you, to tell you about myself…"
She smiled despite herself, her lips meeting his in a slow kiss, "I love you too Justin," she whispered, the admission surprising herself as much as him. She rested her head against his chest, her eyes closing contentedly, she was finally at peace.
A quiet rain fell from above, soaking the streets, the black asphalt slick with water, a clean swishing noise sounding as cars passed on the street. Jess stood in the window, watching the droplets slide down the pane, her eyes wide like a little child’s.
She turned to JC as he played the piano, his soulful voice filling the room. She stepped up behind him, her arms wrapping around from behind, her lips grazing his ear lobe gently. He shuddered at her touch, his fingers slipping off the white keys, his head dropping back and resting against her chest.
She smiled, kissing his cheek, taking his hand into hers. She led him up the short set of stairs to the marble entry way and opened the door, greeted by the soft rattling of rain, her eyes lighting as she jumped bare-footed into a puddle which had collected beneath the front door’s step.
He watched her as she splashed through the puddles, her ebony hair even darker than when it was dry, the silvery moon causing it to glimmer in the dim night. She turned her face up to the sky, the drops of heaven falling onto her face. She grinned towards him as he laughed, and took his hand, leading him down the circular driveway to the street.
The night sky was painted black, thick clouds of dark gray looming through it. She let out a child-like shriek as thunder clapped in the distance, lightning flashing and lighting up the sky for a split second before it hit, miles away and faded into the darkness.
He laughed as she splashed him, soaking his white wife beater with warm rain, then wrapped her arms around his neck her cold cheeks meeting with his. "Dance with me, JC," she whispered as he wrapped his arms around her waist. And so they danced, the rain falling around them, the deep rolls and rumbles of thunder their only music.
"I’m cold," she whispered softly, as they stood in the entrance to the house, the marble floor puddled with water.
He smiled, more than happy to wrap arms around her, his eyes capturing hers. He felt her warm breath against his lips as he leaned into her, closer and closer, his lips barely touching hers. "Is this better?" he asked softly, his bright blue orbs locked on hers.
She nodded, as she leaned in, her lips melding with his. He kissed her slowly, passionately, the rain from her cheeks blending with his. She closed her eyes in sheer happiness, letting herself forget about the bet, about the pain he had caused, her hands running through his dark hair, and then down to the back of his neck, sending shivers coursing up his spine.
"Are you cold?" she asked softly as they broke the kiss, both parties still in awe of what they had allowed to happen.
He slowly nodded, swallowing deeply, his Adam’s apple bobbing, knowing exactly where the question and her coy smile was leading.
"Maybe we should get you out of these wet clothes."
They had done it again.. Made love. Slept together. Fucked. Whatever you called it, they had done it…again. JC watched Jess as she lay in his arms, sleeping peacefully, her chest rising and falling in rhythm with his own.
He prayed that this morning after wouldn’t be anything like their last. He didn’t want the yelling, the screaming, the crying, the accusations. All he wanted was for things to be right again. Was that too much to ask?
He cringed as he felt Jess stir. She let out a soft yawn, looked up at him then peeked below the sheets. "Oops," she laughed before wrapping her arms around his neck and closing her eyes, "I guess I lost the bet."
She placed a few soft kisses on his jaw then kissed his neck slowly, smiling satisfactorily as he let out a soft, gliding moan. "Go back to sleep, JC," she whispered as he kissed the top of her head, his fingers running over the velvety skin of her back.
He sighed in relief, his eyes closing. Everything was perfect.
