“She broke up with you?” Jackie was sitting on the bed in the hotel room, a bit perturbed. Something about the room wasn’t right.
He stood in the doorway to the bathroom, resting his elbow on the doorframe. “Yeah, I mean, I know it was best for the both of us. I couldn’t give her what she needed.”
“What did she need?”
He shrugged. “Stability.” He laughed softly.
Jackie cracked a smile.
He sighed. “I dunno. It’s all right, though. We’re still gonna be friends.”
Jackie eyed him. “Mm hmm.”
“No, seriously.” He sat on the bed next to her. “I’m babysitting Cole tomorrow.”
Jackie nodded. “That’s really great, Justin, I know how much you like Cole.”
He nodded, as well, a slight smile on his lips. “Yeah, I really do.”
They sat in silence for a moment before Justin rose.
“Jackie, what the fuck are we doing?” he asked.
His question took her a bit by surprise. “W . . . I don’t know what you mean.”
“You’ve never been to my house,” he said, turning to face her. “You’ve never seen where I live, and you’ve never done anything with me except sit in this shitty little hotel room and talk.”
She shrugged. “What else is there to do?”
A smile graced his features. “I know the answer to that now. So much, Jackie. There is so much for us to do.” He nodded his head. “Come on,” he said. “We’re leaving.”
He opened the door and gestured for her to leave. She rose uncertainly from the bed, a bewildered smile on her lips. “Where are we going?”
He held his hand out to her. “Somewhere else.”
As she took his hand, she finally realized what was so different about the room. The candles. Yes, they were all still there, but not one of them was lit.
He actually blushed. “Yeah.”
“Where do you get the money for this?”
He shrugged. “Places.”
“You don’t deal drugs, do you?” she asked half-seriously, eyeing him.
He grinned slyly. “No, of course not.”
“Wow,” she breathed.
“Let’s go inside,” he urged.
She smiled and took his hand as he led her into his home, preparing to give the grand tour.
“Have you ever been to Graceland?” he asked her an hour later, running his fingertips up and down her arm slowly as they lay stretched out on the couch.
She giggled. “No.”
“Me either.” He was silent for a moment. “We should go.”
She smiled, pulling his arm closer around her body. “Someday . . . .”
“Yeah, someday . . . .”
