Brian walked into fifth period English, and was about to take his normal
seat in the back left, but found someone had beaten him to it. She had long
blonde hair and fiery green eyes. He decided to opt for the seat next to
her, instead of his usual, "Hi, I'm Brian."
She looked up from her notebook. "Uh, hi, I'm Faith," she said uneasily,
then smiled. Her eyes seemed to light up when she smiled, and Brian enjoyed
this, so, from then on, he made it his duty to make her smile at least once
a day.
At the end of fifth period Brian decided to walk Faith to her locker, "So
what brings your family to Lexington?"
"They didn't like my friends," she said, "I hung out with what they called
'the wrong crowd'."
"Tell me about it," Brian said.
"I'd rather not," she said, then slammed her locker closed, "So, do you have
any idea where room 203 is? I believe it's history..."
"Sure do, that's where I'm headed. I'd be glad to escort you."
"Such a gentleman," Faith said, then laughed, "Lead the way."
******
"So what're you doing after school today?" Brian asked as they walked out of
sixth period.
"Uh, nothing... I think, why?"
"Well, I was thinking, maybe you'd like to get something to eat, or
something."
"No... I mean, I'd love to, but I don't think I can. My mom has been kinda
strict since we left LA. I could ask though."
*****
"A guy?" Faith's mother, Emily, asked concerned.
"Believe me Mom, he's not like the guys I knew in LA. He's sweet, and funny,
and... you'd love him, I swear."
"Uh-hu. Well, we'll see about that, cuz I'm meeting him before you two go
anywhere."
"Fine, he's coming over at five. That's when I told him to pick me up,"
Faith walked upstairs into her room.
"What're you doing?" Emily called.
"Homework, do you mind?"
Instead of doing homework, Faith decided to call her old boyfriend.
"Hey Devon."
"Faith? Where the hell are you?"
"Mom dragged me out here to Lexington, it's in Kentucky, ya know?"
"Yeah, well, it's nice to hear from you..."

"I'll get it!" Faith said, running downstairs.
"Brian, hi," she had completely lost track of time talking to Devon, "I
didn't realize it was that time already." Seeing her mom walk up behind her,
she decided to use her to escape, "Brian, this is my mom, Emily. Mom, this
is the guy I was telling you about. Why don't you guys talk
while I go get ready."
Without giving either of them a chance to protest or even say hello, she
raced upstairs.
"Hello, Mrs..."
"Emily is fine," Faith's mom said.
"Emily, nice to meet you."
"Well, you seem like a nice enough young man."
"You sound surprised," Brian said.
"Well, you would be too with the type of guys she used to bring home..."
Brian looked confused, "I assume she didn't tell you?"
"All she said was she used to hang out with 'the wrong crowd', but I assumed
it was none of my business."
"Well you were right," Faith said, walking back in the room, brushing her
hair, "And it's none of your business to tell him either, Mom. I'll tell him
when and if I feel it's necessary."
Emily just shook her head and sighed, then turned her attention back to
Brian, "So what time do you plan on having her back?"
"Oh, probably around nine, I'm not sure... no later than ten though, I
promise."
"Good, cuz I don't want her out too late on a school night."
"Relax mom," Faith kissed her mother on the cheek, "I'll see ya later, k?"
"Bye, have fun!"
*******
"So where are we going, anyway?"
"You'll see," Brian said, as he drove down an empty highway. They finally
stopped in front of a small farm.
After helping Faith out, Brian blindfolded her.
"Oh, c'mon Brian, I don't wanna wear this blind fold... I hate not being
able to see where I'm going."
"Trust me," Brian said, taking her hand and leading her forward.
What Faith didn't tell Brian was that she had a larger trust issue,
especially after what she had gone through in LA. Unwilling to rely on
someone else, she pulled the blindfold off. Luckily for Brian, they were
already there, so she was still surprised.
"Oh, Brian! It's wonderful... No one's ever done anything at all like this
for me before..."
"It's not that wonderful," Brian said. He had led her into a barn, where he
had lit a few candles because there was no electricity in it, and he had set
up a picnic.
"Oh, but it is! I... I don't know what to say," Faith was close to tears,
"Thank you."
"It's really not that much. Had I known you were going to be so happy, I
would've saved it for our second date."
"Date?" Faith asked.
"This is a date, isn't it?"
Faith didn't know what to say, she suddenly felt really stupid, "Brian, I'm
sorry... I feel like such an idiot. I... well, I guess I just wasn't paying
attention. I'm sorry..."
"So you didn't know it was a date?" Brian asked, embarrassed, "Do you want
"No," she said quickly, "No, it's just... had I known it was a date, I
would've dressed a little nicer."
Brian grinned, "I think you look nice in what you're wearing."
"Nice?"
"You know what I mean."
"Well, can we start eating now? I'm starved!"
"That's what the food's for," Brian said, opening up the picnic basket.
