~April 1993~
"Maybe I'll go visit Cassedy's grave after school" Brian thought to himself.
He was in school, in history class, the last class of the day, and Mr. Robinson was talking about World War 2. Brian wasn't paying much attention. He stilled missed Cassedy, but he'd continued his life without her. He had made it a habit to go and visit her grave as often as he could.
He was deep in his thoughts when someone knocked on the classroom door. Some one came in and said:
"Brian Littrell you have a phone call waiting."
Brian's heart started beating faster. Who could be calling him here at school, something had to be wrong. He ran to the phone, and picked it up.
"Who is it?!!" he practically yelled.
"Wow, calm down Bri. It's just me Kev." a male voice laughed on the other side of the phone.
Kevin was Brian's four year older cousin, that had moved to Florida a while ago. They were close but Brian didn't expect him to calling him at this time.
"Oh, hi Kev. What's up?"
"I'm sorry to bother you at school but I couldn't wait…" he started.
"It's okay, I wasn't paying much attention anyway." Brian laughed. "What couldn't wait?"
"You know how I move down here to start a singing career?…" Kevin continued.
"Yeah, how is the work as Aladdin working out? Is it fun there at Disney World?" Brian interrupted.
"Yeah it's great… but stop interrupting so I can tell you what I called you for!"
"Okay okay, tell me then." Brian smiled at Kevin's eager.
"Ok… I met these three guys, and I joined there singing group… Here's the thing, we've been looking for a long time for a fifth member, and then I thought of you… What do you say?" Kevin asked.
Brian thought about it for a while. He remembered what Cassedy always used to say him 'You'll be a famous singer and sing in front of thousands of people', he smiled.
"Hello, daydreamer!! Have you been listening to what I've told you!!" Kevin yelled in the phone.
"Oh, yeah. Of course I would like to come down there and be in your singing group, I wouldn't miss this chance. And I owe it to someone." he said that last part almost whispering.
But Kevin didn't pay much attention to that last part, he was too excited.
"Ok then, I'll call you later and we'll set the time you should get on a plane down here." he said.
"Ok. Bye Kevin."
"Bye Bri"
"Oh Cassedy it's a dream come through! This is my chance to become a famous singer like you always told me…"
Brian sat by her grave holding the angel in his necklace in his hand.
"Oh, I wish you could be here and share this with me. I miss you so much, Cas… Well I gotta go home now and tell my parents about the news. Bye. Love you." Brian said and left.
"He didn't hear the whisper after him.
"I wish I could be there too, I'm so proud of you Brian…"
When Brian got home he found out that he was the last one to know about the group. Kevin had already called and asked his parents. His mum was a little worried about Brian's education. But Kevin had told her that there would be a tutor with them because two of the other members were younger than Brian.
Brian and his parents sat down and discussed the whole thing, and already the next morning he was on a plane towards Orlando.
The whole audition worked out great. Brian had the right voice they were missing, and he got along great with the other guys.
After that they had some hard work in front of them. They singed everywhere, from high school dances to pet stores. Finally they got a record deal, and they released their first single. They boys were disappointed that their music didn't go so well they didn't hit the charts as they hoped.
But one day, their manager called. They were hitting big in Europe.
"We're going to Europe!!!" all five of them cheered.
Brian was alone in his room packing and he looked at his necklace.
"We did it Cas!! I'm gonna be a famous singer!!" and he smiled his first really happy smile since that awful morning.
Above him an angel, his angel, was looking down at him, smiling too. She had been longing to see him smile like that again.
"Yeah we did it Brian."
~Year 1998~
The guys were somewhere in Germany.
Brian looked out in the audience. All that people were there for them. How many could it be, maybe 15 000 or more. He loved his life. Every night a concert somewhere in the world, singing to thousands of people that sang a long and knew every words to their songs. He thought of Cassedy. He thought of her everyday. Wishing she could see this.
Little did he know that she did see this. She had seen every concert he had done the last six years.
She watched Brian sing and dance to one of their songs. There was so much energy, and it reminded Cassedy of when he was little.
"What's wrong with him? He missed a step."
"Don't worry I'm sure you're the only one who noticed. You know his every move in your head" her grandmother laughed.
But Cassedy didn't laugh. She knew something was wrong, she could see it his eyes. There's been something with his eyes the last days, something she recognised but couldn't remember when he looked like that the last time.
"Hey man! You're okay? You look a little tired." Nick said to his best friend Brian after the concert.
"Yeah I'm ok. Maybe I'm just getting a cold." he sighed, and then everything went black.
"Brian!!! Brian!!! Hey guys, come here!!! Brian has fainted!!!!" Nick yelled worried.
"What's happening to him, grandma!!!!" Cassedy cried.
Brian sat in his room together with his doctors.
"Brian I have some bad news. It's your heart again…"
"How bad is it, doc" Brian said worried.
"All this stressing around, dancing, singing and the other things you do with the group aren't good for your bad heart. Remember, the whole is still there."
"What are you saying… You mean I have to quit the group?? I can't do that, I love this life!!! Isn't there another way??" Brian said angry, scared and sad at the same time.
"You could do a operation… it's not hundred percent safe but it might make you better. It's your choice, quit group or surgery. I can call home and set a time for you." the doctor said calming him down.
"I'll have the surgery… but not now." Brian said taking a deep breath.
"Brian it's for the best if you have it now…" the doctor started.
"NO! I won't. Not in the middle of the tour. The fans would be so disappointed." Brian interrupted.
The doctor didn't say anything. He saw there was no use, Brian had made up his mind, he wouldn't let down the fans.
During the concert that remained of the tour, Cassedy watch every move Brian did.
"Good! At last he's taking it easy. I can't understand why he's risking his life for his fans." she sighed.
The day for Brian's surgery came. His family, and the other guys in the group were there.
"Make sure you come out of there…" Kevin started.
"I'll be fine… Really." he tried to assure them.
"You better be…" he heard someone say, but it was all quite in the waiting room. No one in there said that.
Casssedy sat in a corner of the surgery room watching the monitors, making sure every beep that should come out of it came.
She was really nervous, but now she understood why she was left behind here in this world watching over her best friend. She had to make sure he made it through this, there were many people outside caring for him as much as she did.
The surgery took a little while longer than expected, they found another hole in his heart that no one knew about. But he was a strong guy, he made it through it.
Brian was really sleepy. He woke up in a dark room. He lifted his head a little and saw someone sitting in the corner.
"Who's there??" he mumbled.
The person stood up and started slowly walking towards him. Before entering the light around the bed, the person asked: "You… see me?" Brian gasped for air. He knew that voice. But it couldn't be… or could it… "Cas??" he whispered. "Is it really you??" She stepped out in the light, and her whole face lit up with a smile. At first she just stood there and stared at him who did the same, then she ran towards him and gave him one of those big friendly hugs he had missed do much.
"Oh Bri. You don't know how much I missed doing that!" she cried.
"As long as I have, I guess" he said laughing through his tears.
"How can this be possible?" he asked.
"I don't know. I've been watching you the last seven years, wanting to talk to you, touch you, let you know I'm still here… I don't know why I got the chance to do this now…" she answered.
"You've been here… all the time… Was it you I heard before the surgery?"
"You heard that?" she smiled.
"Yeah I did…"
"So… 'Mr. famous singer'… I told you so… I was right, wasn't I" she smiled even wider.
"Yeah you were right all the time.. But I did it for you.. I wanted you to be proud of me.."
"I am!!…. I've watched every single one of your concerts, and you are great up there on the stage, you really belong on it…"
They continued talking like old times. like nothing ever happened. After a while Brian turned quite.
"What's wrong Bri…"
"Cas…. what happen that night?" Brian turned serious.
Cassedy looked down, tears forming in her eyes.
"Cas, I need to know, please…" Brian pleaded with tear filled eyes.
"Um… I was at that party, remember?… Everything was great I had almost forgot about Steve, when… When he stepped in to the house with another girl in his arms!! I couldn't believe he did that!! We had just broke up a couple of hours ago!!"
Brian pulled her in for a hug and held her tight, never wanted to let he go.
"I ran to my car… and drove away after a while…. I was so hurt… I couldn't think…. I wanted to see you, you would've comforted me, told me everything would be alright… I guess I wasn't paying much attention to my driving, and my sight wasn't the best for all the tears…. suddenly the other car was there… on my side of the road… I couldn't do anything… couldn't move…. I tried calling for you… I don't know why… Now I know it was useless, I wasn't anywhere near your house… I guess I was just use to having you close…"
Now Cassedy couldn't stop crying. And neither could Brian.
"I heard you… I did… You were in my dream, calling and you were crying… and then you started to sing…" Brian whispered.
"Sing?"
"Yeah, you know… our song…"
"…'Seasons in the sun'…" they said simultaneously. And started singing together…
Goodbye to you my trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we've climbed hills and trees,
learned of love and ABC's,
skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.
Goodbye my friend it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now the spring is in the air,
pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there
We had joy, we had fun,
we had seasons in the sun.
But the hills that we climbed
weren't just season at a time…
As the song ended they both were smiling through their tears.
"You have an angels voice." she said.
"You are my angel" he said.
Brian noticed that Cassedy was getting transparent. His ayes were terrified.
"No don't go!!! I can't lose you again!!!" he screamed.
"I can't stop this… Brian listen to me… I'm so glad I got my greatest wish completed… to be here with you a last time… I'll never leave you, I'll always be here… and one day you'll see me again… I promise…" she whispered, and then she was gone.
Brian couldn't believe this had happen. And Cassedy was right, again. They had to be more than grateful for getting this moment together. And he smiled through his tears, knowing she wouldn't break her promise, he could already feel her watching him.
Brian recovered fine from the surgery and after two months of resting he was back on tour.
"How are you all feeling out there tonight??" he asked the thousands of people watching him.
"GREAT!!!!" was the answer he got back.
"Ok, I've got the chance to sing a song myself tonight. This is a cover and a very beautiful and meaningful song to me." he sat down and took his guitar.
Right before he started playing he whispered:
"This is for you Cas…"
And he started playing the music to 'Seasons in the sun'.
At the end of the song he had tear in his eyes.
And so had Cassedy. "Thank you…" she whispered even if she knew he couldn't hear her.
But he did… In his heart.
~A couple of years later~
Brian was back at the hospital, but this time with happy reasons.
He stepped in to the room where his wife laid in the bed, holding something in her arms.
"Hi baby" he said and kissed his wife on the cheek.
"Look Brian. You've got a beautiful baby girl."
"Can I hold her?" he picked the baby up.
In his arms he held the most beautiful baby girl he had ever seen. She had blonde hair and eyes blue as the sky… she looked like an angel, like his angel.
"I have the perfect name for her…. Cassedy Angel Littrell…" he said and smiled.
