Glendalough, or the Glen of two Lakes, is one of the most important sites of monastic ruins in Ireland. The monastic settlement was founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century as a holy retreat. It is not difficult to see why he chose to settle here. Although it would have been very remote and desolate at the time he chose to establish his hermitage here, it is one of the loveliest settings I have ever seen.
