Star Interview - August 2001

When Star* headed to the coast for the day, we may not have had blazing sunshine beating down on us, but we did have the boys from Blue to keep us warm. As Duncan, Simon, Lee and Antony sexily posed for our cameras, the atmosphere was definately hot. And as they larked around at Camber Sands in East Sussex, the sexy R&B boys couldn’t stop talking about one thing - girls.

Star*: HAVE ANY OF YOU GOT GIRLFRIENDS?
Lee: No, I haven’t got a girlfriend and I don’t really want one at the moment; it’s too much hassle. Simon: I don’t think it’s fair to commit at this time. I didn’t have a girlfriend before I started singing, so why should I have one now? We’re in and out of the country and I just haven’t got the time.
Duncan: I think that’s the main reason why we’re all single. The job we’re doing at the minute is so busy and it’s taking up all of our lives, 24/7. But I am getting quite broody in my old age. I’m 22 now, and I want to be a young dad - I want to have a kid in the next 3 to 4 years, I reckon I’d quite like to settle down as well - I think I need that kind of stability, At the moment I want to get my career off the grounf and sort out my life have money to be able to bring up the kids well.
Antony: I’m wary about getting to close to a girl in case I get hurt, and obviously in the job I’m doing now, it would be unfair to have a relationship. But I’m only young - I’m just enjoying my life at the moment and taking each day as it comes.

Star*: WHAT WERE YOU LIKE WITH GIRLS WHEN YOU WERE AT SCHOOL?
Lee: (laughs) I was a little player when I was younger! I always had a girlfriend - I think it’s because most guys are quite shy at that age and the girls didn’t really know who I fancied.
Duncan: I was very popular with the girls. I don’t know why. I used to work in my local cinema and groups of girls used to come in and as I’d tear their tickets they’d all giggle. I’d get little notes saying “Come & sit with us, we’re in the back row.”
Antony: I was a little git to the girls, actually. I remember going out with this girl and all the boys dared me to dump her over this big balcony which overlooked the playground. So I dumped her in front of everyone. I apologised afterwards though, as I felt really bad, and we’re mates now.
Simon: I didn’t pull the girls at school. I wanted to but everyone fancied the same girls. Mind you, I was more interested in football than girls when I was younger. I didn’t discover girls until I left school.

Star*: HAVE YOUR TECHNIQUES CHANGED MUCH OVER THE YEARS?
Duncan: I’m probably shyer now because I’m scared of rejection; it must be an Aries thing.
Antony: I’ve become more confident as I’ve got older. I love girls company. Even if nothing happens, I like being able to talk to girls.
Simon: I still don’t chat girls up. I’m afraid of rejection so I wait for girls to come up to me. I know that if a girl wants something she’ll come and get it.
Lee: Sometimes I’ll be cheeky to a girl or I’ll try the shy approach. I’ve got a few different techniques. I’m good at analysing things - you can tell what a girl’s like by the way she dresses, the way she stands and the way she picks up her drink.

Star*:IF YOU SAW A REALLY BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN A CLUB, WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO GO UP AND TALK TO HER?
Duncan: When it comes to beautiful women I’m shy and think they won’t be interested in me. I don’t have the confidence to go up to girls, if they’re interested then they’ll have to come to me.
Lee: I’m crap; I can’t chat up girls. I’m just myself and I think I’m a bit of a prick as it is. I’m quite chatty and I don’t think girls like that; girls like that moody thing don’t they? They want a James Bond kind of character.

Star*: HAVE U EVER BEEN IN LOVE?
Duncan: Not really. Love’s a very powerful word and you really know if you’re in love with someone. I’ve lusted after women, but I don’t think I’ve ever been in love. I came close once though.
Antony: I don’t think I’ve been in love either.
Simon: I have. I was 17 and she was an older woman - she was 23. I met het at a rave and I was with her for 2 years. She made me stay in on my 18th birthday - she had that power over me. I was an idiot, but I loved her so I didn’t want to let her down. Looking back, I realise what she was like.
Lee: I don’t want to fall in love because when you get married, the sex goes out of the window. I’ve heard it so many times. At the end of the day marriage is just a bit of paper. If you’re with a woman and you’re in love with her, why do you have to sign a bit of paper to tell anyone you’re in love with her?

Star*: CAN YOU REMEMBER WHO TOLD YOU ALL ABOUT THE BIRDS & THE BEES?
Duncan: Yeah, my best mate from school told me;, he was one of those lads who lost their virginity really early so told me all about it.
Lee: I think I learnt from school, but my mum is very open about everything. I grew up with 2 women so I was never bothered about periods and things like that. It’s funny when girls talk in that code language they have about periods. I’m like “Do you think I don’t know what you’re talking about?”
Antony: I remember my science teacher in biology class telling us all; my parents were too embarassed. Me and my mates thought we were going to watch a porn movie to get our sex education but they made us watch a video of some bird giving birth.
Simon: I had a mate who discovered sex at an early age and he told me all about it. I was like “Wicked!” After that, I used to use his story and say I wasn’t a virgin. People must have known I was lying.

Star*: WAS LOSING YOUR VIRGINITY EVERYTHING YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD BE?
Duncan: I lost my virginity 2 weeks before my 18th birthday. I wanted it to be really special and to be with someone I was really in love with. But it was a drunken mess. It’s never how you think it’ll be.
Lee: I lost my virginity when I was younger than that.
Antony: I was 18 when I lost mine and it was a week after my 18th birthday. It was with my now ex-girlfriend and it was weird. I was shocked and stunned. I can remember thinking “I’m a man!” But everyone’s first time is a bit dodgy.
Simon: I was 16 - I waited ‘til the right age. I was nervous, but it was better than I expected.

Star*: WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU LIKE IN GIRLS?
Simon: I like girls who have a laugh. I don’t like it if they’re all uppity. I like girls who are on the dancefloor, not the ones standing around watching. All shapes, all sizes, all colours - I’m not fussy!
Duncan: I like petite cute girls, who you can have a good conversation with about life - I can be quite deep sometimes. I like girls with a sense of humour who are well brought up. I don’t like slappers or mouthy, loud ones. They’ve got to be well educated and well brought up.
Lee: I haven’t got a specific type, but I like girls with nice eyes. If a girl can sing, it gets me straight away.
Antony: I don’t like girls who are snobbish and who know they’re good looking. That’s a bit intimidating. I’d rather have a girl who’s average looking, but has the best personality in the world.

Star*: WHAT ABOUT DATING FANS - WOULD YOU RULE THAT OUT?
Lee: I would date a fan. I’ve seen a couple I’ve thought were sexy.
Antony: There are different degrees of fan. If there’s a girl who’s seen you on tv and catches your eye in a club and something happens, then that’s cool. I don’t think it would be right to go out with a real fan though; it wouldn’t feel right if someone wanted to go out with me just because I’m Antony from Blue. I may draw the line there.
Simon: I’d date a fan. For example, Beyonce could be a fan of mine!
Duncan: I think you just don’t know who you’re going to fall in love with. You can fall in love with anybody, whether it’s a fan or not. It’s not a very professional thing to do, falling in love with a fan, but you never know what’s going to happen.
