Picture forthcoming..Under Construction

In Memory Of My Nephew

I recently learned of the death of my nephew. This was a devastating blow to me not only because of his loss but also the circumstances of that loss. He was the victim of a drive-by shooting. I was so torn by the realization of gang violence and the terrible loss of innocent lives when it hit close to home! I vented those feelings in the poems on this page.

Help is what we need in this world today
To try and understand how we let it get this way
To try and understand how the road to success
Can be more important than a small child
With no place to rest, no place to call home
And no toys in a chest
Help is what we need to understand why
People hurt each other without so much as a sigh
Help is what is needed to teach the young people today
That love is not just a word or a game we all play
Love brings new life to the world each day
Help is what we need when in the name of love
A life is taken away

A second it takes to stare
Fills my heart with despair
It pulls my heart till it tears
Wanting it, wanting to care
It does not matter, it does not care
But youthfulness has this power
When it wiggles itself past, the addiction grows
It feels good, deep inside, it should
Then it burns and turns sour
There's an emptiness that leaves me cold
It knows I'm weak and cannot run
This youthful beauty is a shotgun
A doctor with all his skills
A police officer, who stops the thrills
With little consideration we give
In youth, we expect nothing and give all
Only to know, innocence will be lost
