Around Paris

31 May 2002

.....Today we didn't have class, so Mom, Sis, and I decided to do a little sight-seeing. First, we walked to Accent headquarters where we checked our email. After that, we picked up a few things at Monoprix and went back to our apartment for a quick bite of lunch. When we were done with lunch, we went with one of the girls in our group for a walk along the Champs Elysees. When we got back to our rooms, we met up with 2 other girls in the group. The five of us then headed to Luxembourg Gardens. There was a sorbet stand at the Gardens, so of course we had to stop there too. After we'd spent some time at the Gardens, we were ready to sit awhile, but we weren't done with the sights! It wasn't long before we were taking a boat ride along the Seine. I saw the Eiffel Tower from the water. I was so excited, I nearly shouted!.....

...Mom, Sis and I went to La Fontaine Stravinsky today. We had a hard time finding it, though. It wasn't exactly where our map said it was. Mama finally asked a lady if she knew where it was. The lady didn't know where it was, but she told us to follow her around the corner where a group of people on the sidewalk were talking. There was an older man in the group, and the lady told him what we were looking for. He came over to the three of us and took us to the corner and told us exactly where we needed to go. Great directions! As it turns out, the fountain wasn't too far away at all, we just needed to go behind some more buildings to get to it...

There were birds at the fountain, so we decided to walk back to a boulangerie that we'd passed along the way and buy something to feed to them. We bought a croissant for each of us and a baguette for later. Back at the fountain, we fed bits of our croissants to the birds and shot some pictures of the fountain and surrounding area. There was a jazz band near the fountain. They were really pretty good, and I wish I'd been able to stay a little longer to listen to them.

On our way back home, we ran into a Portugese parade! That was cool, but it started to rain, so we didn't stay long.....

Hot weather + Paris + searching for books = utter exhaustion. Not the kind of exhaustion that comes from a wild goose chase. Not the kind of exhaustion that comes from a 6 hour exam. It's a really good exhaustion, actually. The kind of exhaustion mingled with satisfaction, a job well done. Books are a happy subject for Mom, Sis, and I, so searching for just the right books on a deathly-hot summer day in Paris was really quite enjoyable. The pounds we walked off, the pounds we sweated off, we bought in books and carried all the way home..

...We ran errands today. First, we went to a Russian book store. They had tons and tons of interesting books. We bought several Russian books and also a Russian cookbook written in French. For lunch, a special treat--Pizza Hut! Generally I don't go to Pizza Hut, but Pizza Huts in France are WAY better that Pizza Huts in the States. Never in the states have I been able to buy chips & guacamole and 2 liters of Orangina (a great French soda) right along with my pizza...

It was so hot today, so humid. I didn't want to go anywhere after lunch. I wanted to take a cold shower. But the search for books was still on! So, we headed out again. This time, we went in search for a larger French bookstore. It felt like we walked round and round for hours, although I doubt it was over 90 minutes...

Found the bookstore! A two-story air conditioned bookstore. Did I say there were TWO FLOORS OF BOOKS? There were. Books and books and books. Round and round we went inside the building. After a few hours, with parched mouths and dry throats from spending most of the day without water, and arms laden with books, we left that nice, air conditioned, two-story bookstore. Out into the hot air we came, across the street we went, and into a "Quick" restaurant we walked. I've really been enjoying my fast-food-free summer, but getting a coke there was just what I needed. Lugging books, we started home, only to run in to a Claires. Sis and I took a quick run-through and soon we were on our way (with a few exra things to carry)....
