Feeding the Joeys

We have a good friend, Marie, who works with the wild animal rescue group here, called WIRES. Marie and her husband, Bob, are from New Zealand. Marie usually has at least several animals in her care at any given time.

The baby kangaroo, the joeys, depending on their age, stay with her for a number of months, until they are old enough to fend for themselves on their own. The day we went to visit, feed and take pictures, Marie had two older joeys and one that was quite young, just two or three months. That was such a memorable thing to get to do. It’s always a reminder that we’re in Australia, each time we see a kangaroo.

The joeys need fed ‘round the clock, every two to three hours, at least at first, so it’s truly a full-time job and commitment. The kids and I went to share afternoon tea with Marie, and then she let us feed the older of the joeys.
