Two products that are commercially available for medical robotics are Image Overlay
and Laparoseopic Manipulators. Image Overlay is a method of robotics that allows a
surgeon to combine what they see in reality with a 3D computer generated image. It
allows the surgeon to maintain an image even when they look away from it. Laparoscopic
Manipulators are robotics that transmit a surgeon's hand motions. This allows the
surgeon to get into a smaller space that they wouldn't be able to reach with their hands.
Image Overlay is produced by the center for Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted
Surgery. Laparoscopic Manipulators are produced by the University of California at
Berkley.
A product affiliated with medical robotics is a Laparoscopic Manipulator.
Laparoscopic Manipulators are needle holders, graspers, and other surgical tools that
create a smaller incision than current surgical methods. Its medical importance includes
reducing recovery time by minimizing tissue damage and surgical pain. This is currently
being researched and developed in the following locations: Berkley and San Francisco
campuses of University of California, Department of Electrical Engineering and
Computer Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, and Bioengineering of UC Berkley, and
Department of Surgery of UC San Francisco.
The product that our team has created is involved in long distance technology. The
robotic device that we have come up with will do the surgery even if the doctor is many
miles away. Our robotic device will do this surgery through a computer. The patient
could be anywhere needing the best medical assistance but not have the time to fly
anywhere. Once the patient gets in contact with the doctor, the robot handles it all. The
robot will complete surgery through a computer network that is controlled by the doctor
himself.
Yet, because of all the technology that will be needed to get it to work, the surgical
cost will be high. Depending on the cost of the surgery you would like, or need, to have
done, changes the price. For example, if you were to have a by pass surgery on your heart
with a current specialist, the price would cost around $65,000, but with our new
technology, the price would triple and be about $195,000. No it is not a cheap way of
doing it, but yes, it is the best. It is the only way you can get the best doctor, who may be
half the way around the world, to operate on you.
You would be able to buy this new, advanced product through an insurance company.
If you let them know what needs to be done or this type of surgery is prescribed, than
your insurance company will be able to get in touch with a doctor. The only way to
inform people of the newest development in robotics is through sales. Television and
displaying signs in the hospitals all over the world would be needed to help sales. For the
first year we will display this type of technology in the hospitals. The next two years we'll
need doctor recommendations and hospital adds to advertise our product. With this new
product the future will go far. Everyone will be able to get the help they need quickly and
by the best doctor around.
