JONNY LANG
He's got grit, poise, range and a powerhouse
delivery that drips confidence. His guitar style is
blazing and stinging, his vocals are impassioned
and full- throttle. Everyone from Luther Allison to
Lonnie Brooks to Buddy Guy has been inviting
him to play with them. He sounds like a man
who's been around for a while and who's seen a
lot. He's got the blues in his soul, at his core, and
it erupts in his music.
And he's only 18 years old.
It all started (not very long ago) for Jonny Lang back in North Dakota,
when he attended a
concert by the Bad Medicine Blues Band. He was
floored by lead guitarist
Ted Larsen, who left a very strong impression on
the then 12-year-old.
Lang began studying with Larsen, and a few
months (and just a
few lessons) later, he became the star and leader of
Bad Medicine, which
they renamed Kid Jonny Lang & the Big Bang.
And now, he's on his
own. Getting lots of (much-deserved) praise and lots
of attention. "I want
people to really make a judgment on me as a
musician, without
anything else clouding the issue, like my age," says
Lang. While his young
age is getting him a lot of notice, Lang's work
could easily be stacked
against his (much) older peers.
The guitar and vocal
virtuoso released "Lie to Me," his major label debut
in 1997, a smokin'
set of originals and covers, played with soul, style and
energy. An amazing
accomplishment for the then 16 year old, (he was 15
when he recorded it)
the album would be considered just as impressive
were he twice or even
three times that age.
"I've never been shy
about doing what I do," Lang says, "or afraid to
express myself in
public, even sometimes when I had no idea what I was
doing, and when I
was probably embarrassing myself". I just have fun
singin' those old
blues numbers. They're so soulful and deep/really raw".
I just dig their groove."
It makes you wonder
where all that passion and soulful intensity come
from. Such a young
guy to sing and play with so much feeling. Yet, he's
for real. The genuine
article. Maybe Lang sums it up best of all when he
says, "I just dig
in and play."
