HippieLady:
GOOD EVENING, and welcome to HPI BLUES CHAT! I'm your host, Beverly Howell.
Thank you
for
joining us this evening! Our special guest, JONNY LANG, will be joining
us shortly, but let me open by
passing
on an announcement! Grab a pencil...because I'm about to give you a NEW
EMAIL ADDRESS FOR
JONNY!
HippieLady:
His new email address is: ElPatioWeb@classic.msn.com
(NOTE--Amend
to transcript - November 20, 1997: Jonny's e-mail address has been changed
since this chat...please direct Jonny's mail to Fanhandler@aol.com)
HippieLady:
Ladies and Gents, put your hands together for JONNY LANG!
HippieLady: Hi, Jonny, welcome to Blues Chat!
Jonny Lang: Hi, everybody!!
HippieLady: Don't have to tell ya we're thrilled to have you here!
Jonny Lang: Well, thank you! It's a pleasure to be here!
HippieLady:
Jonny, if you don't mind, I'm going to go right to the questions from the
audience...I normally open
with
a couple, but we're packed to the roof tonight!
Jonny Lang: Alright!
HPI_OsoBlue:
Jonny, I was lucky enough to see you performing at SXSW this year at the
'new' Antone's. You
were
on fire that night! Do you prefer playing small, intimate venues like that,
or bigger ones?
Jonny
Lang: It depends..sometimes I'm more in the mood for a smaller, more intimate
place, but playing front of
20,000
people isn't bad either!
HippieLady:
A question received prior to your appearance tonight, Jonny:...Where do
you buy your COOL
Clothes?
Jonny Lang: Thrift stores!
Julie:
Knowing that Luther Allison is one of your favorites, what do you think
of his tune on the "Paint It Blue"
album?
Jonny Lang: I'm sorry, I haven't heard it yet!
Julie:
From what my husband and I have seen, you've got a great head on your shoulders
and we wish you all
the
best. We'll look forward to watching your future!
Jonny Lang: Thank you! That means a lot to me!
Julie: How are you feeling about opening for the Stones?
Jonny Lang: It's a pleasure to be opening for such HUGE rock 'n' roll icons!
SRV-fan:
Jonny, I love your music! I'm a 14-year-old blues guitarist...here are
my questions: 1) Do you tune your
guitar
down 1/2 step? All the tabs are that way, but I read you say "I never detune
or use a capo like Albert
Collins
did" and 2) Why were you barefoot at the Columbus, Ohio show in August?
(*Awesome show by the
way*)
PS: I got my parents into your music...they love you!
Jonny Lang: I don't tune down, and I play barefoot 'cause it feels good!
Layla2:
At Manny's Car Wash in February you walked freely thru the bar and have
always been very accessible
to your
fans. With your increased popularity however, one needs to be more concerned
with safety.
Unfortunately,
you will probably not be able to meet, chat and interact with your fans
as before. How do you feel
about
the possibility that you will lose that personal contact with your fans?
Jonny
Lang: I don't think that loss of any kind of personal contact has to be
there! I think the second you start
removing
yourself from public things that you would normally do, is when you start
feeling like a prisoner; you
kinda
make yourself a prisoner. I don't intend to do that, you'll see me walking
around WITHOUT a bodyguard!
ArkBluesDude:
Jonny, tell us about you Mom, and her involvement in your CD. Also, does
she have her own
music
career going?
Jonny
Lang: My mom is a great singer and I can probably attribute most of my
learning how to sing to her. Yes,
she
sang backup along with my sister Heidi on a few songs on the album, but
no, she doesn't have her own
music
career going now, she used to, though!
TinPan: Hey Jonny, I was curious as to where you see your music going in the future. Rock? Blues? Jazz?
Jonny
Lang: I think no matter what kind of music I end up doing, it'll always
have a really strong blues influence,
but
I guess time will tell!
ArkBluesDude:
Hey, Jonny, want to let you know that the real blues fans appreciate what
you're doing. What
does
Albert Collins mean to you, as far as an influence?
Jonny
Lang: Albert Collins and BB King are probably my two biggest influences
for guitar playing. I never got to
meet
Albert, but nevertheless, he's still a big influence for me!
musichick: Are you interested in any other musical instruments besides the guitar?
Jonny Lang: Yeah! I love piano, I love drums, bass, saxophone, and I love classical strings too!
Julie: I've just ordered "Smokin'" from Blue Sky. How does it compare to "Lie To Me?"
Jonny
Lang: It's different. I'd been playing guitar for like a year when I recorded
that. It's more of a blues album
than
"Lie To Me" is.
Layla2: Although your success is a dream of a lifetime, what aspects of teen life do you miss?
Jonny
Lang: I'll tell you what I don't miss! I don't miss sitting at home wishing
that I could be out on the road as a
musician
- haha!
Spring:
Jonny, when will you be coming out with a new CD? I love "Cross the Line."
Why isn't that song on the
American
CD?
Jonny
Lang: Oh, because usually we just record live songs from our shows, and
then choose a couple songs
and
make B-side cuts for Europe. That's the only reason it's there, they run
through singles a lot quicker than
the
US. It wasn't on the album really, just 'cause we ran out of room!
Stype: What is your role in the new Blues Brothers movie?
Jonny Lang: I'm a janitor, and I sing a song with Wilson Pickett!
tyyger: Are you always comfortable when you're on stage, and what do you do to not be so nervous?
Jonny
Lang: Yeah, I'm always really comfortable onstage. There's really no trick
to not being nervous, it's just
being
comfortable with what you're doing. I guess I just feel comfortable on
stage.
GuyMan: Jonny, can you tell us about your amps and pedals. What are you using?
Jonny Lang: I use Fender VibroKings for amps, Vox wah-wah pedal, and Ibanez TS808 tubescreamer.
aDrIa: Do you wear prescription glasses or is it just for style?
Jonny Lang: (laughing) Would I wear these things for style?! Yes, they're prescription!
ArkBluesDude: Jonny, how was it for you to be able to present Luther Allison with his Handy Award last year?
Jonny
Lang: It was a great honor to be a part of the Handy Awards. I'm just really
glad they wanted me there in
the
first place!
tyyger:
Jonny, how would you recommend someone getting noticed in the music world?
I need to know. By the
way,
you are awesome!
Jonny Lang: You have to be really lucky! Thanks for the comment!
Jen: Do you still go to school?
Jonny
Lang: I don't go to school as an institution, but I have been tutored,
and I'll be graduating when I go back
home
in December.
HippieLady:
Prior to the show, a fan asked: Jonny, do you have your drivers permit,
and do you practice driving
in that
big ole' tour bus?
Jonny
Lang: I don't have my permit, because I don't have time! But I'll have
you all know, that I was driving
tractors
on the farm when I was 10 years old!
Poopybutt: How do you take care of your voice?
Jonny Lang: I don't have any formal vocal training, so I guess I just sleep is the key, and I don't smoke.
44blues: Jonny, you are awesome! What gives you the energy to play the way you do?
Jonny
Lang: First of all, I'm 16! I also have an insatiable need to always be
doing something that gives me an
adrenaline
rush!
ArkBluesDude:
Jonny, it's hard to imagine that you've only been playing for about 3 years...what
do you attribute
your
quick learning to?
Jonny
Lang: I've been playing for almost 4 years... I attribute my progress as
a musician to playing with players
that
kick my butt all the time! Like the guys in my band!
Queen_Amy: Jonny, who was/is your biggest influence?
Jonny Lang: I would say my biggest general, all around musical influence would be Stevie Wonder.
musichick: What are your favorite songs on both of your CD's?
Jonny Lang: I don't know... that's for you to decide!
BluesGirl: Where you ever shy about getting on stage in front of people?
21:58:46 1997 Jonny Lang: Probably the first time I played I was shy, but after that I wasn't really.
Sinden:
Does being compared to other young blues artists like Kenny Wayne Shepherd,
Mike Welch, etc.,
subject
you to unfair pressure and/or make you more competitive?
Jonny
Lang: There's absolutely no pressure involved! I don't compete when it
comes to music, because in the
end,
we're all in the same band. Music isn't a sport.
HippieLady: Amen, Jonny!
JonnyLangFanatic: What other kind of music do you like besides blues?
Jonny Lang: Every kind!
bassmusician: Do you read music, or do you play strictly by ear?
Jonny Lang: I can't read music, I play by ear.
TinPan:
Jonny, I was just wondering about the sticker on your Tele. I haven't been
able to see it close up. What
is it?
Jonny Lang: It's a picture of a girl from the '50s in lingerie.
HippieLady:
Jonny has a commitment and will have to be leaving soon, so we'll be taking
just a few more quick
questions.
Chandoogle:
Do you like or dislike how so many girls are so obsessed with you?? (I
am one of the obsessed
ones,
you rule!)
Jonny Lang: It depends on what they're obsessed with!
musichick:
I just want to say thank you for being a huge inspiration, for turning
me onto the blues, and for being
such
a cool guy!
Jonny Lang: Awwww... thank you! ALOT!
PianoGeek: What do you do in your "spare" time?
Jonny Lang: Interviews! (laughing!)
HippieLady:
Well, folks, Jonny has to run; thank you SO much for joining us online
tonight...any closing
comments?
HippieLady: (plus you know I love you to pieces, so it was great joy havin' you here in Blues Chat!)
Jonny Lang: Thaaaanks Bev! (chuckle)
HippieLady: You're welcome, hon! BIG HUG!
Jonny
Lang: Thank you ALL for stopping by tonight! Sorry I couldn't stick around
longer, but I'm going to see
"The
Wallflowers" play at Walt Disney World in Orlando tonight! So, I'll see
you later, and thanks for the support!
HippieLady: Have a great time!
Jonny Lang: Thanks!
HippieLady:

Sky Artist Management,
especially
