POISONING FROM TAP WATER
What is it?
Tap water contains various chemicals that make is safe to drink for us, but poisonous to fish. Water must be purified before adding it to your aquarium. See water purifier for in more depth information.

Symptoms:
General signs of stress, and similar symptoms to 'poisoning':

• Gasping for oxygen and fast breathing.
• The fish may hide and appear off colour.
• May just look lethargic and stay at the bottom of the aquarium. The stress caused may also make the fish more susceptible to other diseases.

Cure:
See water purifier for how to prevent it. If you have already added the water, buy some water purifier. Then perform a 50% water change using the new purified water. It will not generally kill most fish if it is just a one off, as the chemicals will be removed within a day or two anyway. But as a general rule, always purify your water.



Remember, water quality is always extremely important- so always check that first as it is often the cause of disease in aquarium fish. When treating sick fish, try to put the least amount of stress on them as possible, as stress will hinder the heeling process. Another thing is to remember is that generally, a healthy fish is a happy fish.
