Books & Plays

Perfume

OK. Now this little book is quite different than any other book you’ve ever read. It’s about a murderer, and the way he thinks, but to tell you that really doesn’t do the book justice. Just read it. You’ll be amazed. Veery different. I don’t want to say too much, and spoil it for you. But, I will add that one interesting thing about the book is, that, by way of background info, it will teach you a lot about how perfume is made (which I found to be quite interesting).

Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead

This is a really funny retelling of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet,’ as the story would have been told if seen through the eyes of two of the very minor characters in the original play, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern. But really, please read Hamlet BEFORE you read this, in order to fully appreciate it. I mean, some of my friends say they got it, even though they did not read all of Hamlet (yes, Jessica, I DO mean you. hehe), but since they haven’t read it, how would they know? So please, do yourself a favor and read all of Hamlet first. Then, you will love this play.

Oleanna

This short 3 act play has only 2 actors in it. A college teacher in his forties, and a student of about twenty, who comes to see him about her grades. I heard it’s controversial, and, after reading it, I can see why. It reads kind of like a slap in the face. Kind of disturbing, but definitely worth a read.
