In a brand new feature, our very own bleached blond goalkeeper, and full time apprentice to Oliver Reed, Mark ‘The Roft’ Howcroft will on a regular basis keep us up to date with his favourite drinks. Roft will keep us informed of any new entries onto the drinking market…In his very own column ‘Roft's Snifters’ the man who has sampled more alcoholic delights than Jilly Goolden will keep us up to date on what is ‘hot’ and what is ‘not’… No.1 - Guinness and Tia Maria This week a new drink I managed to sample over the weekend. After starting the evening with a few regular lagers I was ready to try something new, and when walking past the bar in Weatherspoons I saw something that caught my imagination, Tia Maria. Now to some people Tia Maria may be the kind of drink that you would find the ladies sipping, however I can quash this myth and assure all you red blooded males that this is certainly one for the fellas. Now at first I didn’t take to the idea of Tia Maria on its own. I see myself as a great mixing man and I’m not talking about Paul Oakenfold or the Judge wont Budge. I enjoy sampling a drink and alcohol can be a fine thing, but it is when you can extol the virtues of two drinks mixed together that you are truly enhancing your reputation as a connoisseur in this area. So what could I use to give the Tia Maria it a lift? Coke and lemonade were never an option, they are mixers for lightweights, what I needed was something thick and tasty, and that is why I opted for Guinness. Now Tia Maria and Guinness may not be everyone’s cup of tea. I too was very apprehensive at first but the sight of my mates egging me on soon took away the nervousness. Upon the first sip my taste buds took to it straight away, the taste was a kind of chocolate liqueur, you know one of those crap sweets passed round after Christmas dinner (why do people bother with those things surely it is easier to just down a bottle of brandy?). After that first sip I was desperate for more, so after the second sip it was unsurprising that I has finished the pint off! It was fantastic and it is one which I will revisit in the future (I just hope the Royal Mail Club will mix one for me on the 25th May!). This drink is certainly one that gets you where you need to be, and surprisingly upon waking the next morning, fully clothed, I didn’t feel too bad. I did not visit the Bombay Palace that night though... My final word…Tia Maria and Guinness…spot on!
