Chester City ISA versus Marks & Spencer Financial Services FC

The Imperials, Blacon  Sunday 24th March 2002

The Onion Bag Fanzine Chester and District Sunday League Section D

The lads moved one step closer to the league title with a comprehensive victory over a depleted M&S side the victory also made it the first time the ISA had beaten M&S after the three previous attempts had ended in defeat.

The pre match team talk was to ‘go out and do the job’ Braz stressed the need for the lads to go out keep it simple and produce a solid team performance.  In winning the game 9-2 the lads responded in the right way however for periods of the game the natural flow and creativity that had been evident in previous weeks wasn’t there and it needed midfield maestro’s Scott Ditchfield and the gaffer himself to pull the strings in the middle of the park to ignite the game, this was matched by an outstanding performance at Centre half by Steve Painter partnered by Manfred as Dave Mel missed the game due to a back injury.

The first half was an intriguing encounter as ISA watched by arguably there biggest gate of the season struggled to get a solid grip of the game in the moments of the first half that they did, strong runs down the flanks by Rob ‘off to sunny sunny Spain’ Reay and Kev Thomas produced some superb crosses into the area for Andy Johnson and Tommy Hollinger.  Goals did come though and typically it Was that man Johnson who led the way as did Rob ‘san Miguel’ Reay who skipped and danced through the M&S defence faster than a bullfighter and another member of the Tafia Graeme Reynolds.  By half time the lads had opened up a 5-1 lead.

The second half saw the game open up a bit more and further goals from Johnson, Reay and a flowing team move led to Hollinger ably supplying the finish.  Rob Reay was unlucky not to bag a hat trick and he signed off in superb style to take up a year in Spain although there is no truth in the rumours that after Steve Painter’s acting breakthrough last year he was off to make a remake of the woeful BBC soap El Dorado for the RTL channel in Germany.   Oh and yes M&S did fire in a consolation but it was too little too late the game was won for ISA meaning that victory in the last game against St Werburghs would clinch the Section D title at the Imps.

As it has been for the second part of the season the title is in our hands and one feels that due to the lads unbelievable will to win and sheer enjoyment of playing the game will take the lads through in style…Hold tight!!
