versus Chester City ISA FC
Garrison Field, Eaton Road,
Handbridge Tuesday 4th September 2001
The Onion Bag Fanzine Chester
and District Sunday League Section D
Hopes were high for the ISA lads going in to this game following the previous superb performance against Flogas. Unfortunately, due to the game being played on a (seriously pleasant) Tuesday evening, four of the starting eleven for the Flogas game were absent on work duties so the pack had to
be reshuffled.
With Paul Brazier absent (Steve Sandbach deputised for him in midfield) Paul 'Pleaty' Brighton was once again at the managerial helm, glowing from his Runcorn SC victory. Brighton himself replaced Rob Reay who was not available. The six goal striking partnership of Tommy Hollinger and Andy Johnson were also working so Neil Howell and Lee Miller deputised.
The ISA started well, with Ditchfield and Thomas productive in midfield and Howell especially lively up front. The first twenty minutes were yellow dominated, with the lads making use of the space afforded to Graham Reynolds down the left. It was Steve Painter who went closest in the first half, with a marauding fifty yard run followed by a cracking left foot shot that was inches wide of the target.
It was soon after that that the home side broke the deadlock. The centre forward was played in through the ISA defence, and the cool finish beat James Green from 15 yards. The lads rallied, and went close when Graham Reynolds threatened. Disaster struck just before half time when keeper Green's clearance was charged down by an attacker who duly converted. 2-0.
It was the ISA who came out for the second half more up for it, going close on a couple of occasions, notably when Steve Sandbach 'lost his footing' when clear through. Ten minutes later and the home side made it 3-0, when a near post header looped into the net. The ISA rallied and pulled one back, Neil Howell rounding the keeper off brother Mark's exquisite 30 yard through ball.
The ISA worked hard, both Howell's going close, Mark from a far post header off Sarnie's cross, and Neil with a near post flick from a Steve Painter cross. Painter was unlucky not to score himself with a lob that cleared the bar by inches, but it was the home side who concluded the scoring. James Green, exposed by a poor backpass and some absent (attacking) defenders, spannered his clearance into the path of an onrushing forward. 4-1, final score.
The score is a trifle flattering to the home side, who, whilst deserving to win, were gifted two goals. The boys in Yellow and Black battled very hard, and in Steve Painter and Kevin Thomas have two of the best in the division. They will play worse than this and
win this season.
