Chester City ISA versus Lock Vaults Athletic

Saltney Community Centre, 14th January 2001

The Onion Bag Section D, Chester and District Sunday Football League

This match kicked off in North Pole conditions, with the frozen pitch only playable due to long grass and flat goalmouths. The freezing fog that was all around was doing it's damndest to keep any of the struggling sunlight off the pitch. After losing the toss, the ISA kicked off towards the Sandy Lane end for their first game in over eight weeks. Straight away the ISA looked the better team, with Musgrave's pace and Howell's bulk causing all manner of problems for the Athletic defence. After 10 minutes the home side were ahead. A knock down from Howell and a through ball from Brazier found Musgrave in space. Taking his time he drew the goalkeeper and the defender and picked his spot in the bottom corner of the Vaults net.

The ISA continued to press, with the ever impressive Green and his defence limiting the Vaults to very little in reply. Ten minutes later and the lead was doubled. 'Ginga Ninja' Kevin Thomas volleying sweetly home from 20 yards after the home side had struggled to clear a free kick. It was three shortly after. Steptoe Vile neatly lobbing the home keeper from 20 yards after a Howell through ball. The fourth was an excellent solo effort, Tom Kennedy taking the ball in his stride past the visitors right back and beating the goalkeeper on his near post with aplomb. The second half was nowhere near as entertaining as the first, although Green made a brilliant double save to deny a Vaults attacker. The excellent Hocking was class throughout, and Edwards blotted his otherwise superb performance with a yellow card for a dreadful two footed lunge on an Athletic midfielder. There was still time for Neil Howell to shoot wide when it looked easier to score after a perfect through ball from Thomas, but the ISA FC had done enough. The referee blew for time with a final score of Chester City ISA 4 - 0 Lock Vaults.
