Chester City ISA versus Global Travel

Roodee, 15th October 2000

The Onion Bag Section D, Chester and District Sunday Football League

What a match! That was spectators were saying after this thrilling encounter on a pitch that resembled the Somme. The slippery surface made for an exciting match between the two bottom clubs in the league.

Chester started the game the brighter and with Stuart Musgrave restored to the team they looked very lively. However it was Global who drew first blood after just ten minutes when a free kick for a Steve Painter handball wriggled through the wall, the ball was spilt by James Green and a Global striker side footed the ball home. It took just four minutes for Chester to equalise after Alexander Vile scored a scrappy goal. As Chester pressed forward they looked much better than the opposition and scored again 15 minutes later. Musgrave's chip beat everybody and squirmed in and despite Mark Howell's attempts to claim it the goal was credited to Musgrave. Howell did get on the scoresheet three minutes later after he turned and shot hard and low from inside the box, his first goal from open play this season.

Man of the match Howell made it 4 - 1 just two minutes later. Musgrave played a short corner to Vile who swung in a cross and Howell cheekily headed home. Chester looked like they were cruising and made it 5 - 1 after 40 minutes. Player/manager Paul Brazier rammed home a loose ball after a goal-line scramble. The Chester players then switched off and Global scored three goals in five minutes just before half time. One was Green's fault after a poor kick found an opposition striker who scored at the second attempt after Green nearly atoned for his error. The other two goals have to atributed to poor defending by Edwards and the usually reliable Hocking. The Blues now went in at half time just ahead after looking like surefire winners.

Chester came out for the second half firing on all cylinders and after one minute Musgrave scored a wonder goal from outside the box. Musgrave clinched his hat-trick just three minutes later with a goal from the byline which eluded everybody. It took another two minutes for Chester to extend their lead after Paul Brazier followed up a saved shot to bag his second. But as they had done earlier Chester contrived to give away their lead by handing Global two more goals, one from the penalty spot after Edwards, who began to become very angry, had kicked a striker. However, Chester can rely on Musgrave and he added another two goals to bring the score to 10 - 6.

However clumsy Edwards gave away another penalty which could put Global back in the game. Green managed to save this effort, much to his delight, but shear stupidity on behalf of Steven Sandbach who attempted to put the opposition off meant that the penalty had to be retaken. But Green pulled off another stunning save and in the aftermath Edwards became entangled with the opposition and the game nearly descended into a brawl. When everybody had calmed down Vile saw fit to score from over 30 yards as his weak effort rolled under the keeper. Global still had time to pull another one back but it was too late. So Chester picked up their first win and by an incredible scoreline. This result gives the team a much needed confidence boost after last weeks mauling in Saltney.
