Chester City ISA
FC versus Flogas FC
King George V Imperials,
Blacon 2nd September 2001
The Onion Bag Fanzine Chester
and District Sunday League Section D
It was the Sunday morning after the night before. With at least 5 members of the squad bladdered at Sarnie's eighteenth birthday party, and most of the rest in various states due to England tearing the Germans apart in Munich, heads were a little sore to say the least in the Imps dressing rooms at 10.45.
With five squad members not available (Griffith, Howcroft, Musgrave, Howell M and Johnson T), and with Brian Potts still awaiting international clearance, Brazier had just enough players to fill the shirts. With ex-ISA goalscorer supreme Alex Vile up front and ex-ISA sicknote extraordinaire Craig Phillips on the bench, there was no need to fire the lads up for this one.
The first twenty minutes were patchy with both keepers having to make saves. This all changed when the ISA, attacking the Cemetery End, won a free kick 30 yards out. Step forward Captain Marvel Steve
Painter, who lashed the ball in off the underside of the bar. An absolute beauty, and one nil to the Blues. Nice play in the midfield sent Andy Johnson through for a goal on his debut, and just before half time he doubled his tally with a nice finish for 3-0.
With the central midfield of Brazier and Ditchfield, with the help of Reynolds and Thomas on the flanks, running the show, the lads were soon five up, with Tommy Hollinger smashing one in on the angle, and Andy Johnson running onto a superb Scott Ditchfield pass to beat the keeper for his hat trick.
Flogas took Vile off with half an hour remaining, and started to push at the home side. They pulled one back when a free kick avoided everybody except their number 15 whose excellent diving header from eight yards at the back post made it 5-1. A dreadful mistake let in a Flogas player on the open goal when Green, who had been solid up until then in goal, let a ball he had claimed bounce over his head. 5-2.
However normal service was soon resumed when Johnson scored a fourth after a great run, and it was man of the match Johnson who made it 7 (seven) after finishing off a great through ball from Neil Howell to complete his nap hand. Seeing as it took them 3 months to wrack up their first point last year, this was a cracking display for the lads, and one that hopefully bodes well for the next seven months.
