Staffing and Effectively Managing Human Resources

Human Resource Management:

The sum of activities required  to attract, develop, and retain people with the knowledge and skills needed to achieve an organization's objectives.

Human Resource Planning:

Planning for future personnel needs, skills, labor changes, and related issues (such as compensation and retirement).

Skills Inventory:

A data base detailing each employee's qualifications, education, interests, and career aspirations.

Human Resource Forecasting:

The process of estimating future demand for employees, based partially on estimated demand for products and services, and partially on productivity, technological changes, and social changes.

Recruitment:

The process of attracting qualified applicants to an organization through activities such as advertising and campus visitations.

Job Description:

A written statement of expectations and duties related to a specific job. It may also include the particular responsibilities and personal characteristics needed to fulfill job assignments.

Selection:

The process of choosing and hiring employees from among those candidates recruited for the organization.

Assessment Center:

A method of evaluating employees&-usually managers&-by conducting exercises, simulated work situations, tests, interviews, and psychological testing to determine skills and managerial potential.

Orientation:

A formal indoctrination program that introduces new employees to their job responsibilities, coworkers, and work environment.

Training:

Instruction for specific job skills, usually associated with nonmanagement employees. Transaction processing system (TPS) Also called electronic data processing (EDP), a TPS is configured to handle repetitive data and programmed calculations for efficient transactions and report summaries, not to handle decision&-making support information.

Development:

Programs focused on leadership, productivity, and organizational issues, often associated with management.

Compensation Management:

The management of wages and salaries, including raises, bonuses, and monetary incentives.

Benefits Management:

The management of pensions, insurance, workers compensation dental plans, educational benefits, vacations, health care, and other "fringes" important to employees.

Employee Relations:

A field of activities to help employees resolve personal problems and to improve their performance.

Labor Relations:

Activities concerned with relationships between an organization's management and legally recognized unions and associations.

Performance Evaluation:

The process of appraising subordinates behavior and providing feedback to help them improve their performance.

Halo Effect: (halo error)

Positively or negatively skewing an individual's evaluation on the basis of a limited number of traits.

Transfer:

A transfer is a formal change in an employee's job or position to satisfy employee preferences or to accommodate organizational shifts in resources.

Termination:

Employees are terminated when they are formally severed from the organization through retirement, death resignation, or dismissal.
