Roll Over Beethoven

Venue: The Barnyard Theatre, Menlyn
(Tuesday to Sunday)

Time 8:00 P.M. to 10:30 P.M.

Bassist: Kerry Hiles

The first time I saw Kerry Hiles perform live was as bass guitarist in "Rock Me Amadeus" at the Baryard Theatre in Alberton, so when she invited me to go see "Roll Over Beethoven at the Barnyard in Menlyn, Pretoria, I jumped at the opportunity.

Roll Over Beethoven is produced by Duck Chowles and directed by Charmaine Weir-Smith. The cast consists of Adrian Poulsen, as Beethoven, Celeste Ribeiro and Percy Smith on vocals, Kate O'Hanlon on violin, Sean Butler on keyboard, Vicky Goddard on saxophone, Ralph Martin on lead guitar, Alan Lloyd on drums and Kerry Hiles on bass.

As the music performed in the show was from "my era", every number brought back fond memories of a bygone era. The audience felt the same as they were all foot stomping and hand clapping throughout the show.

The show has a bit of everything, from classically inspired rock numbers, traditional Irish music to snippets from great classical overtures. The numbers are introduced by the "spirit" of Beethoven who returns to earth to hear his music "rocked up"

I particularly enjoyed the Beatles and Queen medleys as these are still my favourite bands.

The singers were good, the musicians better and the combination made for a memorable evening.

The Barnyard venue makes for an enjoyable evening out as you are encouraged to take along your own food and picnic before the show. Liquid refreshments are available at a cash bar.
