Must Have Albums from the MS Collection.
By Martin Simpson

Reading the first part of UT’s column, Must Have Albums from the UT Collection I thought to myself “25 albums are a lot – why didn’t he limit it to his top 10?” After finishing reading the article I was inspired to name my 25 fave albums at this point in my life. I quickly knocked up a list of 25 albums and then 5 minutes later realised that I had forgotten to include Van Halen, The Cult, Mike Oldfield, Grand Hotel, Montrose, Marillion, Gordon Giltrap, The Who, Journey, Whitesnake, The Outfield, Kansas, Winger, Starcastle …… the list goes on and on. “Oh ‘ell “ I thought, “this is going to be a lot more difficult than I originally thought”. I must state here and now before I go further that if I ignored UT’s precedent of one album per artist I would take just about everything Dream Theater have recorded (I don’t think much of their first album) and the remaining slots would be filled by various Yes and Wishbone Ash albums, but UT picked 25 different artists/bands so I’ve done likewise. You’ll notice that there aren’t any bass albums on the list and no jazz either!! Being a lot older than UT, my list comes from vinyl discs that I haven’t managed to get hold of in CD format, cassette tapes As well as CD’s. As with UT’s list, mine is in alphabetical order, according to the band or artist. Here is my list:-

Alice Cooper - Schools Out
Badger - One Live Badger
Boston - Don’t Look Back
Budgie  -Never Turn Your Back On A Friend
Colosseum 2  -The Very Best of Cream
Dream Theater  -Words and Images
E.L.P. - Trilogy
Focus - The Hamburger Concerto
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
Greenslade - Bedside Manners Are Extra
Iron Maiden - The Best of the Beast
Joe Satriani - The Extremist
Jon Anderson - Olias of Sunhillow
Kansas  -Two For The Show
Kate Bush - The Kick Inside
Mauritz Lotz - Turning Point
Montrose  - Warner Brothers Presents Montrose
Pat Moraz - The Story of I
Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of The Moon
The Who - Quadraphenia
T.Rex - The Slider
Wishbone Ash - There’s The Rub
Yes - The Yes Album
Yngwie Malmsteen - Trial by Fire

So that’s it. My list (as of May 2003) has now been logged in. It stands to reason that this list is ever changing. I only heard Yngwie’s ‘Trial By Fire’ for the first time last week so this time last month the list would already have been slightly different. Five years ago it would have had a number of different artists and if I think back twenty years ago the list would have included names such as The Crusaders, Bob James, Stanley Clarke, Weather Report, George Duke, Level 42, Billy Cobham etc etc but over the years I’ve grown increasingly tired of jazz and likewise my love of rock music has increased and the harder the edge the better I like it, that’s why Dream Theater and Iron Maiden take it in turns to entertain me nowadays – there’s no growing old gracefully for this guy!!!! I didn’t want to follow UT’s lead in telling everyone why I picked this or that album because I feel that that’s very personal info and nobody else is really interested in what I think about any particular album but I thought that instead, I’d name the 25 tracks that I’ll miss most as they don’t appear on any of these fore mentioned albums: -

Breathing - Kate Bush
Do Not Disturb - Grand Hotel
Eruption - Focus
Fear of the Dark - Gordon Giltrap
Footprints - Yes
Foreplay/Longtime - Boston
Hot Love - T.Rex
Jamie’s Crying - Van Halen
Kajagoogoo - Kajagoogoo
Kayleigh - Marillion
Killer - Alice Cooper
Living on Prayer - Bon Jovi
Love Games - Level 42
Melange - Greenslade
Naked Eye - The Who
Outlaw - Whitesnake
Peruvian Skies - Dream Theater
Reach For It - George Duke
Rocks Pebbles and Sand - Stanley Clarke
Separate Ways - Journey
Tarkus - E.L.P.
The Valentine Suite - Colloseum
The Wizard - Uriah Heep
Throw Down The Sword - Wishbone Ash
Waiting For A Girl - Foreigner
Like - You

I hope other people also get inspired by UT’s column and put their own lists together – I would be extremely interested to know what Kai, Carlo and Concord would choose as their 25 favorite discs and what tunes they would miss the most. It would make very interesting reading as you can learn so much about where someone’s head is at by learning what they’re enjoying listening to at that point in their lives.
While we’re on the subject of lists – just for a bit of fun (and to take up a bit more precious space in the newsletter) I thought I’d list the top five bands that would drive me to commit suicide if I found myself washed up on a desert island with them. The offending bands are as follows: -

1. Right Said Fred - Puke factor: 100%
2. Modern Talking - Puke factor: 95%
3. Talking Heads - Puke factor: 90%
4. Bros - Puke factor: 80%
5. The Prodigy - Puke factor: 70%

And for my encore!!!!!!!

5 albums I’ve got in my collection of vinyl’s, cassettes & cd’s that I wouldn’t miss for a second if they were stolen from me.

1. Dream Orchestra Live Dave Grusin (on cd)
2. Multiplication Eric Gale (on vinyl)
3. Made In Heaven Queen (on cassette)
4. Headhunters Herbie Hancock (on vinyl)
5. Slayed Slade (on vinyl)

That’s it folks. I’m outta here!!!!!
