Metal Bass in Your Face:
An Interview with Kalin Pashaliev

Unholy Terror

Recently, Nick Cook and I brought you a review of Swedish Death Metal Legends Entombed’s “Inferno” Tour of SA. I caught up the bassist to one of the excellent opening bands – Johannesburg thrash/death metallers Tyburn. And this is what I dragged out of Kalin …

How long have you been playing the bass?
Around 4 years

How did you get started?
I used to go to the art school (NSA). There were a lot of people playing musical instruments so I guess that started me up. After, I saw a Metallica video with Cliff Burton so I decided to play bass.

What gear are you currently using?
I use a Cort 5-string bass with a 100-watt Crate amp, D’Addario xl5 round wound strings. Ibanez flanger and boss distortion pedals.

If you “accidentally” mug someone and find that you just got a whole lot richer, what gear would you buy?
Fender 5-string jazz bass. The meanest Trace Elliot and a cool effects unit (so I better mug Bill Gates or something)

What have you been doing for the past five years?
Studying and playing music.

Who is (are) your favourite band(s) or solo artist(s)?
In flames, Soilwork, At the Gates, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Sting, Pink Floyd, Dream Theatre.

If you could play in any international act, who would it be and why?
Probably Dream Theater. It is music which consists of pure musical genius but I don’t think that I could pull it off even in my wildest dreams.

What has been the high point in your career?
Probably playing on the same stage as Entombed when they were on their South African Tour in May 2003.

And low points?
Well… I don’t think that there are low points in one’s career (if it can be called a career). All you need is your Guitar in your hand and buds who are willing to play with you.

Any advice for young bassists or other musicians trying to make it out there?
I don’t thing that I am capable of giving advice to anybody as I still have a lot to learn about the instrument. I am also only 21 years old but I guess that if I had any advice it would be: Just Jam!

What are your current objectives with regards to the bass?
John Mayung. Yes!!! one day I would love to play like him. That’s all I want!
