The Bassix Web Browser
December 2002
by Julian

Is it that time of the year already? Gosh, where has 2002 gone? Seems like only yesterday that Martin was on the blower getting this project off the ground. Anyway…

The Web Sites:
1. Anyone familiar with Robben Ford or Eric Johnson, will also be familiar with the monumental playing of one Roscoe Beck  http://www.roscoebeck.com . His playing is always reserved, always interesting, and always supportive, but when allowed off his supportive leash, Beck can play with the best of them, his cops belying his genre of choice. Very nice simple site. Roscoe Beck is one of the few players that can make a jaw drop by simply holding it together. Truly wonderful.

2. At long last, one of the best bass players ever (and I will offer no arguments here) finally has his site up and running. Steve Bailey  http://www.stevebaileybass.com/  is a master – period. His 6-string fretless work is the stuff legends are made of, and he is already just that. I know of no other modern player with so much talent and he still has the ability to surprise me every time. But Bailey isn’t only about chops. I’ve heard him support players in so many genres and do just that – support. The consummate professional. Brand new site.

The Technical Corner
1. We’ve all seen them, Andy brings them in, Concord plays them, and now maybe the rest of us can enjoy them too. Lakland  http://www.lakland.com/  finally have an entry (for want of a better word) bass in the new Skyline series, which are made in Korea. Unlike so many other (so called) entry-level instruments, Lakland haven’t served up a dud here. These superb basses come with Bartolini pickups and EQs, and the same craftsmanship that their American big brothers have. In fact, they all go through the Chicago office before being shipped. I want one!!!!

2. Andy’s (the owner, not the shop) the inspiration for this one. He is in the process of building a Telecaster (I know it’s a guitar, I know, I know…) from Warmoth  http://www.warmoth.com/  parts. So I decided to check out the site. Man, what a cool place if you own a credit card. Their Gecko bass especially got my blood pumping. Very nice body parts are a very, very good price. Now that’s a deal. They send you either an unfinished body (or neck) so that you may do to what you will, or they supply the real deal – some very tastily finished items. And they do custom orders too. Again, very cool deal.

So, until next time, which will be in 2003, if Christmas is your deal, then enjoy, but remember...keep it grooving!
