Metal Review: Agro
Unholy Terror

Agro started as a garage band in Alberton in 1990 (originally known as the Agro Grannies) and has since established itself as one of the finest metal acts in South Africa. The current line-up is Cliff Crabb (Vocals), Shane Pennicott (Lead Guitar), Daniel Lambonon (Rhythm Guitar), Robbie Riebler (Bass), and Grant Merricks (Drums). Daniel replaced David “Mountain” Keitzman, who was tragically killed in 96, whereas Robbie replaced the original bassist, Phillip DuToit.
Agro has released three albums to date - From Within (1995), Eyes (1997), and The Tree (1999). In 2000, the were also included on the “New Breed” compilation, along with acts such as Groinchurn and Mesadoth Their new album, The Fourth Coming, will be out soon.
Agro’s style of music can be summed up in one word: HEAVY – it is one of power thrash, technical, and melodic metal. They are fast and ferocious, lead by Cliff’s powerful vocals and Shane’s vicious solos. The guitars are reminiscent of the old Megadeth (see “Rust in Peace”). The vocals are aggressive and remind me of the early Machine Head-type of sound. The music, in turn, is very much influenced by acts such as Iced Earth, Manowar, Iron Maiden, Helloween, and Blind Guardian.

Agro has been labelled as South Africa's only "positive power metal" band. Their songs touch on aspects such as the state of the world and people who live in it: how to make the world a better place to live in from a realistic and positive point of view. The band also feels very strongly about animal liberation work and charity, and has done a number of gigs for institutions like the S.P.C.A., Cotland’s Shelter for Children, and the Alberton Child Welfare.
A definite highlight in Agro’s career was playing at Wacken in 2000, sharing the stage with international acts such as Rhapsody, Iced Earth, Royal Hunt, Ancient, Venom, Twisted Sister, Sentenced, Gamma Ray, Lizzy Borden, Labyrinth, and Hypocrisy. Cliff said that they made good friends with Matthew Barlow (Vocals/Iced Earth) and also met metal great Dee Snider (vocals/Twisted Sister).
According to Cliff, their next goal is to get signed on a bigger label and see what happens from there. And as a message for fellow metalheads, Cliff had the following to say:
“Believe in yourself and what you have to offer. Nobody will ever be able to destroy the Metal culture, so don't listen to the Bullshit media, we will be here, forever so long as we stand together and keep fighting for OUR space. The scene is growing world-wide, we are getting stronger, so stay strong and stay TRUE!!!”
I personally have seen and gigged with Agro on a number of occasions, so if you like power metal that cuts to the bone in every conceivable way, I would recommend you check them out when they are gigging again. If you would like any more info on the band get in touch with me (through Martin).
