Marc's Top Movies of All Time

(current as of 9/21/03)

1. The Usual Suspects
- Still #1. Nothing can top this movie, this movie gets double bonus because it has
Stephen Baldwin in a role that doesn't suck, and that he doesn't suck at playing.
2. Clerks
- This movie has jumped up 3 slots since my last list, for the reason that it defines
my life like no other movie can. Working in a convenience store, or a video store in my case, and
having to deal with stupid customers, stupid people that like to hang around in the store, and
a boss that is a total asshole.
3. Memento
- Again, the Academy does not obviously know what their categories mean. This movie
should have won not only for Best Screenplay, which it was the BEST of last year, hands down,
but for best editing as well, this movie is superb in everyway, from the cast, to the story
and the directing.
4. Fight Club
- Another one that moves up, solely on the fact that I've read the book, and it just
makes the movie even stronger. Fuck the corporate bullshit! The first rule of Fight Club is
YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB.
5. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
- Wow. An amazing film, with a great cast and an amazing setting (well at least where it was shot
New Zealand). I'm not even a fan of J.R.R Tolkien's Books (I Hated the Hobbit). But this movie
kicked total ass. I can't wait for the 2nd and 3rd ones.
6. The Matrix
- This is just a movie that you can work over and over again, it's just timeless, well
at least until the 2nd one comes out, which better go the Godfather way of the second part
and not the Jurassic Park way.
7. Hackers
- If not for the way the computers screens are, and some of the talk about the speeds
of their comps, this movie would hold up very well throughout the years. This is a definite
way of how the government views Hackers, and the vast majority of them are not bad at all.
8. Dogma
- The Catholic Church hated it. But who cares about them? This movie is great because
of the religious issues it deals with, and if you have the special 2-DVD edition of this movie
it's even better because there's over 1 hour! of deleted and extended scenes which didn't make
the cut, which is bad because some of them are great.
9. The Truman Show
- Truthfully, Jim Carrey's last good movie (Me, Myself & Irene BLEW, Man on the Moon was
mediocre, and The Majestic, well I heard it was so bad I don't WANNA see it). Again this movie
deals with "Big Brother" a 1984 kind of reality, except it only involves one person, and he's
the only one that doesn't know about it.
10. L.A. Confidential
- A ode back to LA in the 50's. A great cast, a great ending, and just an overall good
look to it. It's slick, it's got everything right, and it brought Russell Crowe to stardom.
Also look for Guy Pierce in the big role before Memento!
11. Chasing Amy
- Overall, Kevin Smith's BEST movie, but for me it's a little lower on my list mainly
due to external factors, but this is still a great movie, and it has Ben Affleck's best acting
to date. Even though he was da BOMB in Phantoms.
12. Se7en
- David Fincher is a sick genius. He also brought you Fight Club, The Game and The Panic
Room, and he knows how to make a movie dark, and brooding, which is a refreshing way out of most
of the Hollywood crap these days. Well done, Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt work very well together
even though in the movie they don't really like each other.
13. 12 Monkeys
- What happens when you combine Terry Gilliam, Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt in this
gritty tale about time travel, and about changing the past to make the future better? You get
one kick ass movie, and the best acting performances out of the two main stars to date (Pitt
was nominated for Best Supporting Actor)
14. High Fidelity
- John Cusack is one helluva an actor. But this is his best performance in any movie.
This movie is a classic, dealing with movies, relationships, co-workers all in one great,
terrifically acted out movie. Can't miss Jack Black in his first big, and best role, to date.

Movies I LOVE...but have yet to decide where they belong on my list...

Say Anything - starring John Cusack...mainly for having one of the most memorable scenes of all times, along with one of the most effective uses of music in a movie. Amazing.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl - Johnny Depp is the fuckin MAN!
Poolhall Junkies - I think I've seen this one about...10 times already. I can just watch it over and over again. I fuckin love it.
Donnie Darko - Amazingly good...it even has Patrick Swayze in it!
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - the obligatory nerd choice
American History X
Shawshank Redemption - an amazing film....Morgan Freeman is one of the best actors of my generation
Life Is Beautiful - a stunning accomplishment in film. Everyone should see this movie. It manages to take a subject so serious like the Holocaust and have some comedic elements in it, and having one of the saddest endings of all time....it even made the Maddness man cry.
