Chapter 3

The next day went by quickly and before he knew it, Lance was preparing for launch. He was both excited and nervous at the same time. At the current moment he was saying goodbye to his band mates.

“Watch out for Jason,” JC said as he hugged him goodbye.

“Don’t worry, I’m ready for him.”

“Huh?” asked Chris. He had his video camera in his hand.

“Nothing, don’t worry about it,” Lance said, hugging Chris tight.

“Attention, will all astronauts please report to the ship. It is boarding time,” an announcement rang out.

Lance gave the guys each another hug goodbye and took off toward the ship. When he got there, the other three crew members were standing by the ship’s door. The man that had spoken to them two days earlier was with them.

“Okay, remember what you have been taught in your training,” he said when Lance had stopped beside the rest of the crew. ‘Okay, it’s time to get strapped in. Good luck and have a safe trip.”

Lance followed the rest of the crew into the ship and proceeded to strap himself in. About twenty minutes later, everything was ready. Lance listened to the announcer outside.

“All systems go. Prepare for lift off in ten, nine, eight…” The crowd started counting down with the announcer. “Seven, six, five, four, three, two…” this was it, “…one! We have lift off!” he said as the ship lifted off the ground and rocketed into the sky.

The vibration of the ship shook Lance up so much, he thought he was gonna be sick. But once it left the earth’s interior, the rocket’s flight smoothed out and he relaxed.

Lance looked out the window to see a huge starry sky spread out in front of him. His eyes glowed with amazement.

“Whoa!” said one of his crew members, “It’s beautiful!”

“I’ll say,” Lance said. “I’ve never seen anything like it! Now all we have to do is make sure the ship stays on course. That shouldn’t be too hard. The course has already been programmed into the ship.”

“Right captain,” said another crew member. “I’ll study the ship’s tracker.”

“Right!” said Lance, “Good thinking.” He had been shocked when he had been selected as the captain for the mission but he was cool with it. It wouldn’t make any difference if someone else had been the captain, all of them were new to space travel.

Everything was going smoothly, it seemed nothing could go wrong on this space voyage. The astronauts were not prepared for what was about to come.
