ORLANDO
Jacob Underwood sat on his bed in the guest house, strumming his guitar and making notes on a pad of paper. He constantly scratched things out, cursing under his breath. If one looked closely, one could see that Jacob was fighting the urge to cry. He had recently broken up with his longtime girlfriend, Janie. He was having a hard time coping with the break up and as a result, had an even shorter fuse than usual.
There was a knock at the door. “Come in!” Jacob called in an aggravated voice. Trevor Penick entered the room. “What?” he asked coldly.
Trevor sighed and shook his head. “Mike M. asked me to come and get you. He and Mike C. have something to discuss with us.” Jacob threw his pen down on his notepad.
“Fine! I’ll go but I hope he knows this does not make me happy!” He got up and began to stalk out of the guest house. Trevor shook his head again and followed.
“Jake, you’re not happy right now anyway.” Jacob grunted as they walked into the house and down the hall to the meeting room where the Mikes and the other guys were already sitting.
“Glad you could join us Jacob,” Mike M. said as Jacob took a seat beside Erik Estrada. Jacob only grunted again. The final two members of O-town, Dan Miller and Ashley Angel glanced at each other and then looked back at the Mikes.
“So, what’s so important you had to draw me away from my music?” Jacob asked, putting his feet up on the table. He winced and put them back down on the floor. Although his back injury had healed, he still had little bouts of pain every now and then.
“We need to discuss the upcoming tour,” Mike C. said. Jacob groaned.
“I thought we already went over all this!” he complained. Mike C. looked at him and frowned.
“We did, but we also told you guys that not everything was finalized yet and there might be some changes.” He looked over at Mike M. who picked up the discussion.
“There has been a change.” The guys all glanced at each other and looked back at him. “A young lady will be joining you on the bus. She is going to be your opening act.”
“Then why doesn’t she travel on her own bus!” Jacob snapped. He didn’t like traveling with strangers. They always seemed to be all up in his business. Again, Mike C. frowned.
“She’s just starting out. She doesn’t have her own bus yet. So, we were kind enough to let her have one of the bunks on the O-town bus.”
“What about my privacy?!” Jacob cried, standing up and putting his hands on the table.
“Jacob, I know you don’t approve but…”
“Damn right I don’t approve!” He slammed his fist down on the table. “The last thing I need is a wannabe pop star butting their head into my business. Not to mention, it has to be a girl too!”
“Jake, calm down dude,” Erik said. Jacob glared at him.
“No, I won’t calm down!” He spun on his heel and stormed from the room.
“That did not go well,” Ashley said as he and the others watched him go.
TALLAHASSEE
Alyssa Star ran around her room, grabbing things to put in her suitcase. Twenty-one years old with long wavy dark brown hair and blonde highlights, honey colored eyes, and a smile that took your breath away, Alyssa was bound to be famous. That was exactly what was happening. She had signed a record deal and was getting ready for her first tour. Actually, she was only opening but it was a start.
Her cell phone rang and she hurried over to grab it off the dresser and answer it. “Hello?” she asked, deciding to take a break and sitting down on her bed.
“Alyssa, hi, I’m glad you answered,” said Mark Devland on the other end. Mark was her manager. “I got great news.” Alyssa sat up straight; this was the moment she’d been waiting for.
“I’m listening,” she said in an anxious voice.
“I was finally able to get your music director to tell me who it was he set you up to open for.”
“And?”
“And what?”
“Who are they? Are they well known? Is it even a ‘they’ or just a he or she?” Mark laughed.
“Slow down girl. Yes it is a ‘they’. They are well known. Have you ever heard of O-town?” Alyssa’s eyes widened.
“You mean that really popular boy band that started on a TV show?!” she cried in an excited voice.
“That’s the one!” Mark said. She could almost hear the smile on his face. “You’re going to be touring with them. But wait, I have some even better news.”
“What?” Alyssa asked curiously. She didn’t know how this could possibly get any better.
“You will be traveling with them on their bus.” Alyssa had to clap a hand over her mouth to keep from screaming. “Now hurry up and finish packing, I still have to drive you to Orlando. The bus leaves the day after tomorrow. I’ll pick you up in an hour to take you to Orlando. We’ll stay in a hotel until it’s time to meet them at the studio. I’ll drive you there and then you’ll be on your own.”
“Sounds great! Bye!” She hung up the phone and proceeded her rushed packing.
ORLANDO
Jacob had retreated to the guest house where he had kicked his dresser and immediately regretted it. He was now sitting on the bed with his face in his hands. His guitar still stood against the bed where he left it. The notebook he had been writing lyrics in, lay spread open next to him. There was another knock on the door but Jacob didn’t bother to answer. He didn’t even look up when he heard the door open and someone cross the room to sit beside him. The person put a hand on Jacob’s back.
“Hey,” he heard Dan’s voice say, “You okay man?” Jacob still did not look up, he mumbled into his hands. “What?”
“Nothing,” Jacob said softly. He finally looked up at him. “So, what’s her name?”
“Huh? Who’s name?” Jacob frowned.
“You know, the girl who’s going to be invading our privacy. What’s her name?” Dan gave a look that seemed to say ‘Do you really care?’ “Come on, just tell me. I can live, I’ll just ignore her, that’s all.” Dan sighed.
“Alyssa Star,” he finally said. “She’s twenty-one and from Tallahassee. That’s all the Mikes told us. They didn’t say anything about what she looked like. I don’t think they even know what she looks like.” Jacob snorted.
“Do you honestly care? I mean, I don’t. She’s probably another wannabe blonde anyway.” Dan got up from Jacob’s bed and headed for the door.
“Jake, you really shouldn’t stereotype, it’s not fair.” He opened the door and left the room.
Jacob just shook his head and picked up the guitar again. He slowly strummed the guitar, humming to himself, his eyes closed.
ORLANDO HOTEL
Alyssa entered the hotel room and threw her bags down on the bed. She ran to the window and glanced outside. Although she had grown up in Florida, she had never been to Orlando before. She knew it was night and she wouldn’t see much but she had to look out the window anyway. She couldn’t wait for the day that she would meet the guys.
The truth of the matter was, she had been an O-town fan since day one. Her favorite member was definitely Jacob. She liked him the most because he stood out. The other members were great but they all fell right into the boy band criteria. Besides, Jacob being so different reminded her of her self. She wasn’t that typical blonde hair girl that many solo pop princesses were. She, she had blonde highlights but her hair was naturally the beautiful dark brown color the highlights accented.
“Hello?” Alyssa said when she had retrieved her cell phone which had been ringing on the nightstand.
“Girl, I’m here,” came her best friend Bree Shauffer’s voice on the other end of the line. “What room are you in?”
Alyssa practically squealed when she heard that Bree was at the hotel. “Don’t worry, I’ll come down and get you.” She hung up the phone and jumped off the bed, a smile on her face.
Bree and Alyssa had met in their freshman year of high school. They had been best friends ever since. But after they graduated, Alyssa had chosen to stay and attend a local college, while Bree flew out to California to attend UCLA. Both had just graduated college and neither had seen each other in the four years they were attending. Alyssa was psyched that Mark had agreed to arrange for Bree to come along on Alyssa’s breakout tour as a performer.
She didn’t bother to take the elevator, she was too anxious. After all, she hadn’t seen her best friend in four years. Instead, she ran down the stairwell and out into the lobby. She recognized Bree immediately, catching sight of her elbow length dark red hair as she stood looking around the lobby.
“Bree!” Alyssa cried. The girl spun around and smiled. There was no mistaking those emerald green eyes; they were definitely Bree’s.
“Alyssa!” Bree cried back, running towards her. Several people in the lobby looked up as the two girls reached each other and hugged tightly. Then Alyssa grabbed Bree’s hand and ran back up the stairs.
“I’m so glad you’re here!” Alyssa said finally, shutting the door after she had let Bree and herself into the hotel room. Bree laughed.
“Me too, it seems like it’s been forever.”
“I know,” Alyssa replied as she sat down on her bed. Bree put her back down on the other bed and sat down as well. She looked at Alyssa excitedly.
“So,” she said, “Did Mark tell you who you’re going to be opening up for yet?” Alyssa nodded and her smile widened.
“He sure did! And you’re not going to believe who it is!” She pumped her fist in the air, still grinning. Bree thought she looked like one of those cute adorable anime characters when she did that. She moved so that she was sitting on the edge of the bed and leaning forward.
“Who?” she asked in an anxious voice. Alyssa leaned forward to where her nose was almost touching Bree’s.
“Do you really want to know?”
“Yes!”
“I mean really, really want to know?”
“Yes!”
“Are you sure?” Alyssa smirked. She just loved keeping Bree on the edge like this.
“Yes! Come on Lissa, just tell me!” Alyssa folded her arms across her chest and sat back against the wall, still smirking.
“Alright, I’ll tell you.” Bree leaned even more forward. By now, she was so far forward Alyssa thought she might fall off the bed. “Tomorrow,” she continued.
“What?!” Bree cried and actually did fall off the bed. She quickly jumped up from the floor. “I don’t think so! I’ve been waiting for ages and you’re going to tell me now!” Alyssa laughed.
“Relax Bree, I’m only joking.” Bree blinked. “If you must know, it’s O-town.” Bree’s eyes went wide.
“O-town? As in Ashley, Dan, Trevor, Erik, and Jacob O-town?!” she cried out.
“That’s the one.” Alyssa cringed when Bree screamed.
“Oh my God! I can’t believe we’ll be hanging out with O-town! Erik is so dreamy! But then, so is Ashley, and Dan, and Trevor, oooo, I love Trevor! And Jacob’s hot too!” Alyssa laughed. She knew Bree would be excited.
“Whatever. Just keep your hands off Jacob, he’s mine!” Just then, there was a knock at the door. Alyssa went and opened it to find Mark standing there. “Oh, hey Mark. Were we being too loud because we can keep it down?” Mark shook his head and stepped into the room.
“You must be Bree,” he said to Bree, extending his hand. Bree nodded and shook it. “I’m glad you will be going along to keep Alyssa company since I won’t be there.”
“You won’t?” Bree asked, looking confused. Mark shook his head. “Why not? You are her manager.” Mark laughed.
“That’s true. Unfortunately though, there has been a death in my family. I’m flying out to Seattle the same day you guys leave on tour.” Bree looked apologetic.
“Gee, I’m sorry to hear that, my deepest sympathies to you and your family.” Mark smiled.
“Thank you. Well, I only came to introduce myself and tell you girls that it might be a good idea to go to bed. The tour starts the day after tomorrow and there are still some things that need to be done before you leave.” Alyssa nodded. “Goodnight,” Mark said and left the room.
Alyssa closed the door, yawned and stretched. She looked at Bree in a kind of silent goodnight and both girls got ready for bed. Despite her excitement about the tour, as soon as Alyssa’s head hit the pillow, she was out like a light. Bree watched her for a moment, before her eyes fluttered shut and she too fell fast asleep.
