LAW enforcement authorities are investigating the suspected arson of the house of Lennox John, owner of Splashmin's Fun Park and Resort and Ashmin's Store, by fire Sunday night.

The fire was reportedly set by two men who escaped on a motorcycle.

The two-storied building, located at Lot 60 Blyzeight Gardens, burned quickly.

Despite the prompt attempt of the Guyana Fire Service and public-spirited citizens, the fire was beyond control, and a Mercedes Benz car was saved after being pushed out from under the burning building. The car was badly scorched.

Up to late yesterday it was not clear what was the motive for the torching of the popular businessman's house but many recalled hearing several gunshots before they saw thick smoke coming from the building.

Residents had noticed two men riding on a motorcycle several times through the street before the conflagration and observed they left fleeing the yard shortly before fire engulfed the building.

However, the businessman was not available for a comment.

Revellers who were enjoying the Mashramani Carib, Soca Finals at Splashmin's Fun Park on Sunday night were forced to seek cover as gunshots erupted during the event.

According to a well-placed source, the shooting apparently had a connection with the inferno at Mr. John's residence.

There were no reports of injuries but many left the event unceremoniously, hurriedly gathered their children and sped away in their vehicles.

The Guyana Fire Service and the Guyana Police Force remain mum on the incident.
