Sight-Reading: Teacher Helpers:: For sight-reading, teachers really cannot help you to prepare very much. For this reason Sight Readers are not assigned teacher helpers. Training Workshops:: Instead of teacher helpers, two or weeks before your competition, Mr Jones will arrange a couple of special Sight-reading workshops. Here you will be able to learn some useful tips and tricks, and have a chance to practice in front of a larger audience. Check this website and the Speech Festival Notice board for dates. How to prepare and Practice:: 1. At home, take a favourite book, such as Harry Potter and stand in the middle of your bedroom. Open the book at a random page and begin reading aloud. You should read for about 2 minutes. You can set you stop watch to remind you when the time is up. 2. Nearer to the competition do the same as above, but ask your parents or friends to be your audience. 3. Try different books, and make sure you practice sections with speech, and also sections without any speech. Hints and Tricks:: 1. When there are people speaking, try to give them different voices, so the audience can hear who is speaking. 2. Make sure you do not rush. Slow and clear is much better. 3. Always remember to leave a short pause after the end of sentences, and a longer pause after a paragraph. 4. Try not to use a 'reading voice', e.g. do not let your voice become flat and dull. When speaking normally, our voices go up and down, sometimes high, sometimes low. You should try to do this when reading too. 5. If there is a question, make sure it sounds like a question (e.g. you voice should go up at the end). 6. If something exciting is happening, make your voice sound excited. If something sad is happening, make your voice sound sad. Etc.
