The beginning of snowboarding can be traced back to the 1920's. Back then, kids used broken barrels to stand on and slide down a hill on the snow. In Vermont, the "snow-surfer" became the snowboard because of help from Jake Burton Carpenter (Burton snowboards). He started by shaping boards out of wood and making rubber straps as bindings. In the late 70's and early 80's Vermont held the first established snowboard competitions: the National Races at Suicide Six in
Pomfret, Vermont. Because of much interest in this new sport, it later created the U.S. Open at Magic Mountain. The Open is now one of the most popularsnowboarding events ever. It is now held at Stratton Mountain Resort.
The first "snowboard park" was also made in good ol' Vermont. One of the runs there was entirely dedicated to the snowboarders. They were free to build as many jumps and things as they wanted.
