:: DETAILS ::
Morpheus is the enigmatic stranger Neo has been seeking for the past few years. He is also a man on a mission, which ends when he finds Neo, only Neo does not realize that for some time. Morpheus is shrewd and strong, he presumably leads the human Resistance against AI. He is a leader to his people and a father figure to his crew in the real world, at the same time managing to be the most wanted terrorist in the Matrix.
Morpheus has been unplugged longer than anyone else on the Nebuchadnezzar; he may even have known The first One back in the day - he says to Neo, "It was he who freed the first of us." He may be simply referring to the Resistance which Morpheus is very much a part of - has been all his life - and not to himself in particular, but who knows.. He certainly is very much affected by what The One represents ("...to remake the Matrix as he saw fit... End the war, bring freedom to our people...") and he believes that Neo is The One. As the Oracle says, "He believes it so blindly that no one, not you, not even me can convince him otherwise." Is Morpheus right? Or will his blind faith be his undoing? These questions remain up in the air right until the end of the movie (for a brief time we think they have been answered, but then we're proven wrong several times)... Morpheus' character is another testament to the fact that The Matrix has to be seen whole, you can't see bits and pieces and pretend to understand it. You may even have to see it again just to make sure you weren't dreaming... or were you?
Have you ever had a dream that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world? Those words are particularly fitting for Morpheus, as his name is also that of the Greek god of dreams... It has, for many years been associated with deception because we believe that dreams aren't real... In The Matrix, however, Morpheus spreads The Truth... Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony. I say fate.. perhaps I should explain myself.
For those of you who saw the movie and thought it was nothing but cool special effects and wicked fights, don't even bother reading this last bit. For those of you, however, who saw it and went home and tried to bend spoons with your mind, went to see the movie again, and picked up something new every time you did so, ask yourself... When was the last time you had to question your reality? What prompted you to do so? I used the word 'fate' above because anything that causes you to question what is real can only be a work of fate.
This is not a pre-set path that a human being follows verbatim and has no choice in... but an interactive Web of Fate, where there is a finite number of things that can be accomplished by a physical being on this planet - fate composed of all the combinations of these things, where we veer onto a new pathway with each choice we make. There is an end to each pathway, that's where The Answers lie - no absolute answers, I'm afraid.. there are as many answers as there are questions.. and paths.
I'm not speaking to crazy-type people here, who, upon seeing The Matrix believe it's okay to kill people because 'they're agents anyway.' I'm speaking to those of you who ask questions. It IS the question that drives us. And as long as you continue to ask questions, you are sure to find the answers. And if you have never said "I do not want to know," you're on the right track.
I'm going on about this here in Morpheus' section because I know for a fact that in every person's life there is a Morpheus (he doesn't have to be a bald guy, it can be anyone), and it is always up to us to decide whether or not we want to take the red pill (and learn the truth) or take the blue pill (and sink back into oblivion).
These are called the moments of truth, and they're carpe diem situations. You do have to seize the day because your 'Morpheus' may be the old lady you talk to waiting for your bus to come; or that mother of three in the grocery store line. It could be one of your parents on a good day, or a friend, old and new alike. You just have to keep your eyes open (but don't expect white rabbits to be jumping out of the bushes, ok?) Hell, you could even be a 'Morpheus' for someone.. you just don't know it yet.
