Tank is the main operator on the Nebuchadnezzar; he has a very difficult job. It must be incredibly hard to sit by and watch as your friends get butchered and beaten up by agents and cops while you can do absolutely nothing. Tank was born in the real world, he doesn't have plugs, like his 'big brother' Dozer; he can't go into the Matrix and I think that not having to ever be there is what makes him as friendly as he is.
Tank never had to realize that he's been living in a dream world and it doesn't matter how grueling his existence might have been, at least he has had a real life, with [presumably] real parents and a brother. Despite that, he doesn't take the existence of the Matrix lightly and is every bit as loyal to the cause of the Resistance as is Morpheus [who might be guided not only by the need to be free but by the need to take revenge on the machines for making a fool out of him].
Tank loves Zion, the last human city, and he's determined to keep it free from harm. He is even capable of unplugging Morpheus, who is like a father to him, to prevent the agents from getting access codes to Zion's mainframe computer.
