Neo is the focus of the movie... it's hard to speak of him without kind of giving away the ending. His name in the Matrix is Thomas A. Anderson, a program writer for Metacortex, a distinguished software company. He has another life, however, that of a computer hacker named, you guessed it, Neo, who is "guilty of virtually every computer crime we have a law for..."
Most of the last few years he had spent looking for an elusive man [believed to be a hacker] named Morpheus. Neo believes that Morpheus has the answer to the question that has been bugging the poor guy for the longest time: "What is the Matrix?" He is contacted by Morpheus and his whole life goes down the drain [literally] because he learns what the Matrix really is. And the fight for the future begins...as the name Neo becomes his own in the real world.
It has to be said that after some combat training, Neo learns to kick some major butt, which he promptly demonstrates when Morpheus challenges him to "Show me." If anyone didn't like the premise of The Matrix, even they have to agree that the action scenes are worth going back for.
In the real world, Neo spends most of his time looking utterly confused, at least until he gets shot. What happens after that... those who saw the movie know... those who didn't... why don't you see for yourself?
