Advanced Organizer

Field-based Master’s Class

Old Dominion University

June 2003

This document is intended to guide you through this course and serve as a skeleton for the assignment you will turn in as a grade.  Use this document to guide you, not to limit you. As you complete each section, remember that the following process is the most important element of the assignment:

R – reflect on your current teaching/behavior management goals;

S – study research-based techniques that have proven successful;

A – assess your current teaching practices using systematic evaluation techniques;

F – focus on a specific area for new learning;

P – plan how to improve current teaching practices;

I – Integrate new ideas with your personal approach and style.

At the end of class, you will be required to submit a reflection paper that follows the format of this planner.  In the paper, you should include:

  1. A self-evaluation of current practices including supporting data;
  2. A plan to incorporate at least one positive technique including a method for evaluating this plan;
  3. A plan to incorporate at least one reductive technique including a method for evaluating this plan;
  4. And a plan to initiate at least one whole school technique including a method for evaluating this plan.

Reflect on the positive classroom management techniques that you use.  Use the space below to brainstorm.  Be thinking about both whole class and single child techniques.

Now consider how you know that something you do works or doesn’t work.  Remember, as a teacher, you are constantly multi-tasking.  You are picking up on verbal and non-verbal cues from your students, processing them, and making decisions as a matter of course.  For the purposes of this assignment, think about how you can systematically measure your teaching techniques.  First, think about what data led you to make the conclusion you did about the level of success you experienced.  Then consider a tool you could have used to gain additional insight about the success of the given technique.

Consider how you will integrate at least one proactive technique about which you have learned into your teaching.  Think about what you think will realistically be appropriate in the reality of your classroom.

What new technique will you use?

What will be the focus of instruction when you try this new technique?

What procedures will you use to introduce this technique?  What lesson plans, reinforcement schedules?  What resources will you need to make it work?

How will you measure whether or not this technique is effective?

Reflect on the reductive classroom management techniques that you use.  Use the space below to brainstorm.  Be thinking about both whole class and single child techniques.
