Meeting With "XX" At Red Cow Hotel, Naas Road, Dublin.

(Pertinence Veronica Guerin)

Meeting with "XX" at the Red Cow Hotel,
Naas Road, on Saturday 14 December 2002. In the talk with "XX" lasting several hours, Veronica Guerin's name was introduced. "XX" mentioned her at the latter stage of the informal exchange. I quote from disjointed post event hand written notes.

"After matters had reached that juncture (‘XX’ had just made a telephone appointment for me to meet a lawyer friend of his three days on at the Deadman’s Inn public house, the lawyer to read my information pack in the interim. Prior to the telephone call I asked that the meeting be left until after Christmas. But no, it was fixed up for the following Tuesday. A rush job?), we spoke on light, but not entirely light, matters. Jokes were told. By me. By him. 'XX' even read out a text message which appeared on one of his two mobile telephones. I think he was happy with his business. Will I be?

"In amongst the light talk 'XX' introduced a subject matter that was not so light. I’m sure it had purpose. Earlier, on my relating to past happenings, I remarked: 'Between you and me, (content is deleted…)’. I then proceeded to give background to the event.

"As already said, at a later juncture of the meeting, 'XX', taking on a harder countenance, informed: 'Between you and me...' He carried on to say that (official) Ireland too had a capacity to employ dirty work and remove (kill) people. He said that one well known person was got rid of. I asked no questions as to who he was alluding but as he was speaking the name of Veronica Guerin entered my mind. On his saying this there was a bit of a time gap (I saying nothing; he probably assumed, and hoped, I would enter a query). 'XX' was obliged to return. He asked : 'Do you know who it is?' 'Veronica Guerin?,' I responded. 'Yes,' he replied.

"'XX' said that John Gilligan did not shoot Guerin. He carried on to dismiss the reported argument that he had her shot because he feared going to prison for beating her up. He reasoned that there was no cause for Gilligan to kill her; if he was sent down for attacking Guerin he would have got at most a one year sentence. Time served in prison would have been nine months, if that, he said.

"'XX' further declared that ten days or two weeks before Guerin was shot, she and Gilligan met to sort things out with Gilligan prepared to pay compensation but the discussions broke down because Guerin would not come to terms.

"'XX' said that Veronica Guerin was working on a big case at the time (of her killing) which concerned judges involved in paedophilia. It was because of that (and not the matter with Gilligan) that she was set up (to be killed).

"I am sure that half baked formula is designed to convey a message to me (a veiled threat).

"'XX' said that Veronica Guerin was naive, stupid and used. He also said she should not have gone to Gilligan without a male companion. In his saying the aforementioned there (was) a severity of tone in voice and demeanour. I expressed the opinion that Ms Guerin was capable of being unwise and imprudent (in her solitary dealings with criminals).

“For all that she was brave and good. A risk taker. Requiescat in Pace.”

FINGAL MONUMENTS, CLOGHRAN, Co. DUBLIN

CONTENT

*) A communication sent to me following the receipt by Fingal Monuments of a telephone request from an unknown party. I am the sole family member living at the address to which the brochure for headstones was forwarded. There was no family bereavement. I believe the letter was intended as a veiled threat. It is my belief the instigators were the Irish security services. The monument sculptors were acting in good faith in responding to the request. No criticism is levelled at them.

1) Envelope (franked 17.01.02).

2) Covering letter dated 19.01.02 (sic).

3) Sales brochure for monuments (headstones).
