Bluetooth Technology Assessment Project

There is an amazing new technology in the digital world. One that lets you connect wirelessly to a device whether at the office or in the comforts of your own home. This technology is called: Bluetooth. Bluetooth is a wireless replacement for many of the cables we currently use to transmit voice and data signals. Research has found that voice applications represent a considerable opportunity for Bluetooth. For example, Headsets, speech recognition, text-to-speech, and various other applications will all create new opportunities. Without a doubt, Bluetooth technology is essential in today’s world.

Technical Analysis

In March of 2002, the IEEE approved 802.15.1 a standard for wireless personal area networks adapted from the Bluetooth specification. This standard is fully compatible with the v1.1 specification. The new standard also gives Bluetooth greater validity and support in the market place. This set the standard for new technologies to follow.

There are several new technologies that are in competition with Bluetooth. They include; Ultra – Wideband (UWB), Certified Wireless USB, Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11), WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access and IEEE 802.16), WiBro (Wireless Broadband), Infrared (IrDA), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Near Field Communication (NFC), Near-Field Magnetic Communication, HiperLAN, HIPERMAN, 802.20, and ZigBee (IEEE 802.15.4) All of these technologies offer services similar to Bluetooth. Bluetooth, Infrared, and a Wireless LAN can all be easily compared and below is a table stating the comparisons between the three.

There are three different security modes when looking at two communicating devices; mode 1: non – secure, mode 2: service level enforced security, and mode 3: link level enforced security. There are also two different levels of security when looking at the actual devices. A device is either “trusted” or “untrusted”. “Trusted” devices are aloud to connect to other devices were they will apply the different security modes. “Untrusted” devices are unfamiliar to you and you do not aloud them to connect to your device. Security issues have been increasing lately with the Bluetooth Technology, mainly security worries are focusing on the technology when it is used with mobile phones.

Pictured above are several “trusted” devices communicating with each other.

Business Analysis

Bluetooth Applications

Potential for Bluetooth applications is huge, because we transact business and communicate more with people who are close by than with those who are far away - a natural phenomenon of human interaction.

1. As the practice of medicine becomes more sophisticated and complex, new technology is increasingly used in this area. Here we suggest three possible applications of Bluetooth wireless technology in the medical domain (remote patient monitoring, wireless biometric data, and medicine dispensers); certainly others are conceivable.

2. In the hotel industry, the use of Bluetooth technology has been demonstrated at industry trade shows. Possible applications of Bluetooth wireless communication include the ability to check in to the hotel automatically using a Bluetooth device (perhaps via a kiosk, without visiting the front desk), retrieving guest messages using Bluetooth links and enabling in-room information services such as telephones, Internet access devices.

3. In the airline industry, the use of so-called "ticket less travel," or electronic tickets, is becoming more common. Self-service check-in kiosks are beginning to appear in airports. However, electronic tickets still require issuance of a paper boarding pass in many cases, and self-service check-in often requires the use of a credit card or frequent flyer card to identify the user. With a personal device that employs Bluetooth wireless communications, a traveler might check in using this device, which could include personal identity credentials, thus eliminating the need to insert a card into a terminal.

4. The Bluetooth technology connects all your office peripherals wirelessly. Connect your PC or notebook to printers, scanners and faxes without the ugly and trouble some cable attachments. You can increase your freedom by connecting your mouse or the keyboard wirelessly to your computer.

5. Bluetooth Personal Area Networks (PANs) are becoming increasingly important in connecting users, their personal devices and surrounding networks of Bluetooth-enabled sensors. The PAN may contain Network Access Points (NAPs) that connect to a Local Area Network such as Ethernet, Router Nodes (RNs) and PAN User devices (PANUs).

6. Proximity applications, in which Bluetooth devices are automatically connected when they come within range, will be crucial. Retail kiosks, pay phones, and other public access points will support proximity services.

7. Voice applications represent a substantial opportunity for Bluetooth. Headsets are an obvious application, but speech recognition, text-to-speech, and VXML will create new opportunities for voice-driven information access.

8. Using Bluetooth enable digital cameras can send still or video images from any location to any location without the hassle of connecting your camera to the mobile phone on the wire line phone.

9. Bluetooth allows us to have three way phones. At home, your phone functions as a portable phone (fixed line charge). When you're on the move, it functions as a mobile phone (cellular charge). And when your phone comes within range of another mobile phone with built-in Bluetooth wireless technology it functions as a walkie-talkie (no telephony charge).

10. In meetings and conferences you can transfer selected documents instantly with selected participants, and exchange electronic business cards automatically, without any wired connections.

11. Connect your wireless headset to your mobile phone, mobile computer or any wired connection to keep your hands free for more important tasks when you're at the office or in your car.

Costs of Bluetooth

Bluetooth devices use low-cost transceiver microchips, so the cost of manufacturing Bluetooth enabled devices is relatively low. Bluetooth chips are estimated to cost around $4. As a result, consumer prices are low. Bluetooth technology operates on an unlicensed radio spectrum, there is no charge for communicating between two Bluetooth devices.

SWOT Analysis of Bluetooth

The following table addresses Bluetooth Technologies strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.

To further explain the key areas of the SWOT Analysis. Multicasting has the ability to send a single message to several devices at once. For example the new feature would let a CD player send music to multiple headphone sets. In the field of Medical device communications, Bluetooth clearly provides and advantage for highly mobile battery-powered device. These devices would talk to each other within a patient-area network, which will make them less prone to medical errors. Doctors would be able to regularly access medical databases for drug dosages and interactions. Bluejacking involves secretly connected to another users device and sending bogus messages or rendering the product inoperable. In another retrospect, Bluesnarfling is considered more difficult then Bluejacking because it relies on the same technique but focuses on accessing information stored on the device.

Since Bluetooth has the ability to connect devices wirelessly using standards and specifications that increase security and efficiency in a wireless world, it will prevail as a top competing technology. For example the Sony Corporation has taken this top technology and applied it to enhance one of its newest gaming systems: The Playstation 3. Sony has incorporated Bluetooth Technology within the controllers in this new system. The controllers operate using Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, which eliminates the need for unwanted cords. Seeing Sony put this state of the art technology in the PS3 shows that is a company that is striving for the absolute best. This company is one that we should all keep a watchful eye on in the future to observe its growth. Given its current chances of success in being the ultimate game provider, it would be a smart business investment. Many people believe that Bluetooth has a superior future and the members in our research group would all unanimously agree on that fact.
