The First Act

the audience is silent as the lights dim
the curtain slowly opens
your silhouette comes into view
you begin to move
i hold my breath
'please let this go smoothly'

you, up on stage. that's how it feels for me in real life
are you up there for me?

sometimes you act crazy or drunk or stupid
sometimes you sing
sometimes you dance around like nobodies business, but, no matter who i have you become when you're up there, i always know its only you, inside

it's only you

it's you

it's you who lives his life in a ball of irony
it's you who turns off his tv to make a commercial
it's you who smokes a cigar to prove that cancer's coming for us all
it's you who cracks racist jokes but treat everyone equally
its you who hates to travel but are only alive when you're in a hotel
and its you who claims you'll never 'get the girl'

but here i am... you know that....

or were you someone else when i told you?

i'm sitting alone in your audience but you don't hear my applause
