From Toddler to Adult: A brief history.
In Andrew Cheng’s own words: “I am a qualified diploma teacher, graduated from the Maktab Perguruan Seri Kota, Kuala Lumpur (1975-1976), specialising in English. I was teaching in Sek Keb Tg Besar, Kuala Lipis ( a school 9 miles from Benta town on way to Jerantut) from 1977 until I was offered a job as a graphic artist cum animator with TV Pendidikan as from 1.3.78 until now. Just that I am now in a different Sector of this Division.
In 1998 I joined a newly created Sektor Pelbagai Media Pendidikan (Educational Multimedia Sektor) and I still do graphic and animation work. Many a time, I got to do gimmicks for grand functions where the Minister or the PM was involved in the launch. One of those I did last year was the launching of the “Tabung Amanah Pelajar Miskin” held at the Golden Horse Hotel by the then deputy PM, now PM Pak Lah. I used Macromedia Flash where I played with interesting video effects, animated sequence, photos, pictures and suitable sound and music effects. All in all for just two minutes.
If you noticed, I am not a qualified artist by any profession. But my art lecturer in college was approached by senior officers from TV Pendidikan to recommend potential students with artistic skills. I happened to be chosen but not until I started to teach for slightly more than a year in Pahang when a directive came requiring me to report immediately in Ampang, KL. So that means I have been here for 27 years! I guess Ted must have been in this line of audio visual business the same time. That’s pretty long. But the funny thing is, I never met him in KL all these years! But I think I remember Vu-Graph. Somebody mentioned.
Apart from doing graphics and what-nots, I am in-charge of the Makmal Komputer Animasi which houses 5 Mac G4s and 10 PCs. I am also one of the Local Network Administrators (we have one in every state and I represent my Sector/Division). I am again appointed the coordinator for a national workshop this year end. I can only host it in KL as I need to be near my office where the audio studio and other requirements may be needed. This workshop normally lasts for two weeks, continuously where I need experts in authoring (we use Macromedia Authorware and also Flash) and people who are good at crashing the coursewares being built. There should be no more flaws or bugs after the workshop as I have to get the 100% completed educational titles to the factories for repication. My Director makes sure she views every title screen by screen! She’s answerable to the Minister if anything goes wrong. The whole team normally works till the early morn in a hotel.
Well, guess Ted gets a better picture of the nature of my job in BTP”.
