Weekend Box Office 8/15-8/17 - Freddy & Jason Kill The Rest

The weekend box office results are in, and the big standout story is the success of Freddy vs. Jason. While everyone knew it was going to be bigger than any film from the Nightmare On Elm Street or Friday The 13th series, its opening weekend tab was a little better than most sources expected. The take was easily enough to propel the movie to the top of the box office charts.

In other opening news, Grind did poorly, which was a shock to no one. Uptown Girls and Open Range both scored subpar numbers, again, nothing shocking there.

Despite still being in about 3000 theatres, American Wedding continues to crash. Its dropped about 50% each week, definitely not a good thing. Right now, American Wedding is not going to be a top film of the summer. Even Seabiscuit is likely to finish with a stronger number - and it's never had the screens that AW has had.

Pirates of The Caribbean is still doing well, and right now, there is definitely some fear inside Warner Brothers that The Matrix Reloaded may not even finish second-best for the summer. "Pirates" has about $30 million to go to reach "Reloaded", which is going to be tough for Pirates to hit, but not impossible.

Here are the weekend box office estimates:

1) Freddy vs. Jason - $36,425,000
2) SWAT - $18,600,000 ($70,055,000)
3) Open Range - $14,100,000 ($14,100,000)
4) Freaky Friday - $13,100,000 ($57,900,000)
5) Uptown Girls - $11,200,000
6) Pirates Of The Caribbean - $8,500,000 ($247,900,000)
7) American Wedding - $8,164,000 ($80,618,000)
8) Seabiscuit - $8,125,000 ($83,049,000)
9) Spy Kids 3-D - $5,240,000 ($96,845,395)
10) Bad Boys II - $3,200,000 ($128,894,000)
11) Tomb Raider 2 - $2,825,000 ($59,117,000)
12) Grind - $2,615,000
